David Seymour said ... only six schools did not have a computer system that allowed them to easily share their (attendance) data.

Wait? What? There are six schools where neither the principal nor any staff member has a laptop?
What more than a browser would be needed to upload daily attendance figures?

Presumably these six schools also have blackboards & chalk, and require students to bring fountain pens and ink for their written work.

The survey by the state-owned Network for Learning, which provides high-speed broadband to 99 per cent of NZ schools

There are some VERY rural schools.

It says easily send, so I assume that those schools do not keep attendance on the computer, not that they do not have any at all.

Perhaps they use an excel sheet or something rather than proper software that has the option to send a report built in?

That article is 5 years old and refers to kids home internet. I assume the staff will be sending in the data not the kids.

Also I would assume that any school that needed it would just get a starlink to get them online these days.

There are schools that consist of a single room with all the pupils in it and a single teacher, and some pupils arriving on horseback (or at least they used to in places on East Cape, not sure if it's still happening now).  It's quite possible that they don't have access to the required resources.

A bigger What the Firetruck though is this:

He said publishing the data cost about $1 million a year and the only work required of schools was to push a button to send their figures to the ministry every week.

If anyone from the Ministry of Education is reading this, I would be happy to take over this contract for a mere $900,000 annually.  I assume it just means setting up a Grafana feed from InfluxDB?

I would do it for the low low price of $500,000 annually, even if it meant I had to key each number manually every day!

(I did have a job as a student to manually key cheques. Four hours every evening for $10 / hour.)

And yet, slashing staff is the way govt depts are expected to "save money".

If you don't like graphic naked knitted figures, you shouldn't open this link :)

Somerset County Gazette, UK: Shepton Mallet nude knitted dolls for charity split opinions

A knitting group in Somerset UK has been forced to cover the private parts of dolls in the club window - following complaints.

The naked figures were hand-made by the weekly knitters at The Hive café and haberdashery in Shepton Mallet.

They were part of the window display which was created to raise money for Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance.

The five knitted creations by the 'mature ladies' show a policeman, vicar, Rastafarian, as well as a woman with pearls and a man with a beard.

But a woman complained about the figures - saying she did not want her grandchildren ''looking at genitals on their way to school''.

The café has now covered the figures' 'genitals' with small placards informing passers-by of the work Air Ambulance do.

On first look I'm thinking the three with flowers on their chests are morris dancers. The claim one is a rastafarian may be spurious.

Have that with some braindead places when emailing work because the email scanner looks at the links first, and ends up verifying email addresses for me. Its like the developers are not even trying.
