There is no cure for grief. It just gets less intense over time. My Bootsy boy is buried under our apple tree. I used to sit and talk to him every day. Now I don't do it very often, but I still think of him. The love of a pet animal can be a lot like the love of a child. So can the loss. It is painful and it is real. My heart goes out to both of you.

Correct there is no cure fore grief, though I found when we lost our General in 2005 writing about it helped. He is the email I sent to family & friends that fateful day:

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of General our Feline partner and friend.

She was euthanised this day Saturday 21st May 2005 at 1215 in the presence of us both.

General had lived a long and joyous, if not spoilt life, of 18 years & 3 months. She had out lived her sister Alfie by 14 years who had lost a fight against a bumper bar whilst we lived in Melbourne.

We took the decision to end this joyous life when her years suddenly caught up with her. Over the past year we knew that her kidneys were going slowly into End-Stage-Renal-Failure . Whilst we were away in Bali they took a sudden turn for the worst and the Vet at our local Cattery had to give her subcutaneous fluids. Her blood and urine pathology had taken a sudden nose dive. Also just prior to going on our holidays she had developed an acute and rapidly progressive degenerative spinal disorder in her hind region. This rapidly progressed this week as she experienced full body spasms in increasing severity as well as increasing systemic weakness to the stage where she was unable to lay down (without help or for long) to sleep. She was unable to climb, jump or even clean and scratch herself properly. Plus she was developing failures through out the rest of her body.

We shall greatly miss this lovely and loving Feline partner and friend of ours. We shall miss the click click of her nails on the lino. We shall miss the quiet meows and the loving rubs against our shins. We shall miss the gentle paws on our face and the loving licks she gave us both. But most of all we shall just miss her for her self, a loyal and generous friend.

Even now tears well up

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

Yes, I have been there too. General was a fine-looking cat in her day. I'm sure she gave you the same joy and companionship my Boots gave to me. Cats certainly can be wonderful and amazing friends.

They were beautiful baby cats, FineWine. Some people simply will never understand how much we can love our companion animals.

Noelle had her spaying operation yesterday afternoon, we had scheduled it the prior Monday, before Shadow died and there was no reason not to proceed with it.

We picked her up at about 7:30 last evening in the cold and wet and brought her home. Once she recovered from the anesthetic, she wanted to run around like the playful kitten she still is. She's under instruction to take it easy for the next 7 - 10 days. I remember how feisty Shadow was after her op. Hopefully Noelle will be less of a handful.

How on earth do you keep a dog that size from running? Do you lock him in chains?

We also have large, fast-growing, breed - Bernese Mountain Dogs. It's difficult to protect them during the rapid growth, you can't just wrap them in cotton wool. You still have to let a puppy have his/her puppyhood. The trick is to minimise the more damaging activities, e.g. repetitive heavy impact on their joints. Going down stairs and jumping off higher platforms (couch, car, etc.) are more damaging than climbing up. Soft surfaces are another thing to watch too, e.g. soft sand or loose gravel on the beach. During puppyhood mental exercise is just as important as physical challenges, for those times your puppy is bored.

Another thing to watch is breeders or the web boasting about their large breed dog is <insert some ridiculously heavy weight> kg. People who buy large breed puppies do so because they like large dogs. Please don't fall for the fallacy of larger is better. Not all large breed dogs grow to those ridiculous weights. Carefully watch their growth by gauging body condition.

Excuse the soapbox, large breed dogs is a topic I'm passionate about :)

Thanks for this. We have stopped the beach. I recently got a Tuscon for work, so now he's in the boot which is a lot higher to jump down from than step out of the Mondeo. We are looking at ramps to help this - and lifting him down - which is a struggle with his paws kicking about.

We didn't know what size our dog would be as he's a rottweiler x huntaway. He's really tall for both breeds (head at / above our kitchen bench level)

I do lots of training with him, and training rewards are playtime with the rope rather than treats. He's on a diet currently. He's always looked lean, but the vet wants a bit more rib visibility until he's older.

He goes to daycare every day, but they are taking it easy with him. The trainer there love him so keeps training him. Currently trying to teach him to carry a can of beer. (Garage project asked if he could train a dog to do it)
