We were going to be meeting Mum in Japan for our mid year holiday this year. For reasons completely outside her control she’s not going to be able to come. We’ve now got the choice of exorbitant flights to New Zealand for Christmas or we probably don’t see her for another 12 months.

It’s totally first world problems but annoying all the same.

As an infant immigrant in 1960, I wonder at how the world has changed. In the 1800s, when you emigrated you pretty much lost contact with all your family, forever. After coming to NZ, I only saw my paternal grandparents once (which I don't remember), and my maternal grandmother once (which I do remember). Phone calls were rare (like a death in the family, not at Xmas) due to toll call prices. Relatives within NZ you might not see for 12 months or more.

Was that before or after they invented the stone tablet?

It's not the 1800s or 1960s anymore.

Windows. Why is it such a colossal piece of shit?

I just want to turn on my PC and play games, not have windows stuck in an update death loop. I’m pretty close to installing Bazzite and being done with this bloated buggy piece of crap.

The fact that I can find no way to stop my iPhone from inserting (consistently) replacements for words that make no sense.

It almost always produces the word ‘Soto’s’ when I expected ‘should’ - I’ve never deliberately written Soto’s. I don’t know what it means.

Likewise it often replaces ‘and’ with AB’s. Something else I’ve never written.

I was told that when my parent's left the UK in the 50's, there was an unspoken acknowledgement that you'd likely never see anyone you knew from there ever again. And being British, you stiffened your upper lip and got on with it regardless.

That's a country where Londoners think Manchester is "Up North" but some did get a bit of travel in. My wife has a relative that went UK to India back to UK then West Indies back to UK then retiring from Army to Auckland in 1800's.

Mine replaces "We" with "Wellington". So "We should go out for a coffee" becomes "Wellington should go out for a coffee".

The funny thing is it does it randomly - sometimes it leaves the "We" unchanged, and sometimes it changes it for no reason.

I have a third-party keyboard, and it has a "feature" where it can add new words to the dictionary with a single swipe. When I was first learning how to use it, I added a bunch of gibberish words by mistake. Stupidly there is no feature to display or edit the dictionary once you've put words in it!

Never mind the 50's, we came over in 86 and knew we would likely never see anyone again.

A phone call from overseas only ever meant a death notification for a very long time after that.

I've noticed the same thing with Android the last couple of years.

Going back to the old days, the SlideIT app on my first Nexus phones was amazing, but now every single message I type has to be re-read because the predictive version from Google is utterly useless and definitely not getting any better.

Jaffas being discontinued.

https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/national/565660/iconic-jaffas-to-be-discontinued-for-good-after-decline-in-sales

Actually not sure if thats a "small thing".

The gradual erasing of my childhood seems pretty major.

Been dead for a while. Change in texture so they are softer, shrinking of the pack, going stupidly expensive.

Same with fruitbursts. I thought I must have got a single serve pack or something - nope, just shrunk and got more expensive.

When I was about 10 there was a matinee session at the local theatre every Saturday. Three of us got to sweep up in exchange for a ticket to the next Saturday, probably exploitation of child labour. As there would always be Jaffas thrown about I remember buckets full going in the rubbish. At least with wrapped toffees you could save them.

Really irks me too especially since it suggests a nonsensical word that doesn’t even exist to replace a properly spelt word.
then gives the option to return to the original spelling which is correct. Other times it auto replaces a word and you only notice after the message is sent.

This behaviour is random. It’s not doing it at present and am now going to take notice if it happens when plugged in charging. I’m using the device keyboard.

I had noticed on my previous phone Samsung S21Ultra, that the keyboard was more touchy with incorrect key detection when plugged in.  Current phone (S25Ultra) has a longer lasting battery at the moment so I rarely have it plugged in when I need to type.
