So if 8000 affected jobs (which will be no doubt be returning to work shortly) is a global crisis, what does 4000 permanently disestablished roles across the NZ Govt depts count as?  A hemispherical crisis?

From the US Department of State (typically US embassies) today just now.

It's odd because International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia is 17 May.

That's not today, even adjusting for time zones.

"Security Alert: Worldwide Caution

Event: Due to the potential for terrorist attacks, demonstrations, or violent actions against U.S. citizens and interests, the Department of State advises U.S. citizens overseas to exercise increased caution. The Department of State is aware of the increased potential for foreign terrorist organization-inspired violence against LGBTQI+ persons and events and advises U.S. citizens overseas to exercise increased caution. U.S. citizens should:

Stay alert in locations frequented by tourists, including Pride celebrations and venues frequented by LGBTQI+ persons.

Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive information and alerts and make it easier to locate you in an emergency overseas.

Follow the Department of State on Facebook and Twitter."

I had a wonderful couple of days in Venice a couple of decates ago.

Just before we left US announced heightened terrorist threat against Americans and so none were in Venice... Locals commented on how quiet it was.

We spent a few days in Florence in 1998 in the quietest time of the year. No queues and hardly any tourists. Went back about 10 years later in peak American students on holiday. It was quite an entertainment listening to them arguing with the waiters be because the menu didn't contain the US version of Italian cooking. Then they crowded onto the trains and grabbed all the forward facing seats only to spit the dummy when the train reversed out of the next stop.

I used to commute between Europe and NZ. After 9/11 I pretty much had the planes to myself. That was a terrible tragedy and I am not trivialising it, just pointing out the fact that few people wanted to fly then. While I could fully understand that, I do remember thinking at the time that those flights were probably some of the most secure ever to reach for the skies.

There's usually a change log shown here. Is Apple trying to tell me that this update does nothing?

For some reason I get a lot of spam from Shein, even though I've never shopped there, or from anywhere else that we've never shopped from.

"I regret to say that we of the F.B.I. are powerless to act in cases of oral-genital intimacy, unless it has in some way obstructed interstate commerce." — J. Edgar Hoover

"Create a society that values material things above all else. Strip it of industry. Raise taxes for the poor and reduce them for the rich and for corporations. Prop up failed financial institutions with public money. Ask for more tax, while vastly reducing public services. Put adverts everywhere, regardless of people's ability to afford the things they advertise. Allow the cost of food and housing to eclipse people's ability to pay for them. Light blue touch paper." — Andrew Maxwell

New Zealand man filmed trying to ‘body slam’ an orca in actions described as ‘idiotic’ | New Zealand | The Guardian

There are no records of orcas hunting or killing humans. But I'd say this guy was all in for a Darwin Award.

There was a story of an orca sinking a yacht last week.

No one know why precisely.

They have been doing this for months now, mainly in the Mediterranean.
