Finally got round to watching Nightcrawler, really enjoyed it. Jake is awesome at playing a dark character, 8/10.

The missus wasn't keen on it at all though.

I watched Nightcrawler but didn't review it, I thought it was okay, 2.5 stars.
It was good to watch once, prob wouldn't want to watch it again, for fun.
I watched Age of Ultron, the avengers were boring but Vision and Ultron were pretty cool, 1 star.

I haven't seen the remake. But did you see Rage: Carrie 2, I thought it was kinda cool. Mena Suvari and the main chick are pretty great, it's an interesting statement about cliques in american high schools. But a really cool movie about bullying in American high schools is Bang, Bang, You're Dead, it's based on a play.

I've just recently finished watching The Giver & Snowpiercer.

The Giver was a surprising movie.

I won't give away any plot spoilers, but it's sort of set in a Utopian World with a Dystopian feel about it.
As per the book, it's firmly aimed at teens/young adults, but it's an OK movie...just a bit lacking in any real depth.

Snowpiercer was even more surprising.

NOT a kids movie by any stretch.

Set in a post-freeze world (man-made ice age), it revolves around the remaining human race that are on-board a massive train that circles a global track system, which takes around a year to circumnavigate.

They can't stop the train, they can't go outside, so they live on the train, separated by a rigid class system.

Has some moments that are a bit though-provoking and surprisingly has some main characters killed off early on - although you don't really notice that much as you can't help but not get emotionally invested in them.

It's violent, quite blood thirsty and ultimately a bit disturbing, but predictably ends a bit blah. I kind of enjoyed it.

I couldn't help myself. I finally watched The Star Wars Holiday Special (1978) on YouTube. Word's can't express how awful this was. Jesus!

You haven't lived until you've seen Bea Arthur (of the Golden Girls) as the Mos Eisley bar tender AND singing a goodbye song to all her patrons.

I've been traveling for a few weeks/months now and have watched a few worthy movies:

Jiro Dreams of Sushi - a doco about an old man who ows a sushi shop and is striving for the perfect Sushi experience for his clients. He has a Michelin star for his efforts so far. It's a subtitled piece worth watching. 9.5/10

That Sugar Film - a doco about Sugar in our diets a bit in the style of Supersize Me. Fun, informative and clearly written for engagement with teens. 7.5/10

Action Figures - I got this as a documentary, but it is more a montage of Nitro Circus stunts set to great music. 6.5/10

Road - this is the motorcycle documentary the Why We Ride should have been. It follows two brothers obsessed with winning Isle of Mann and other road races in Great Britain and it explores the costs and compromises of their compulsions. Chilling. Unreal footage. Will make you want to buy a motorcycle, today. 9/10

Started to watch A Haunted House last night (it wasn't my pick!)

It was absolutely terrible. I had had enough after 5 min, the GF toughed it out a bit longer, conceded she had made a blunder after 15min.

By a considerable margin, the worst movie I have seen all year.

0.25/10 (shudder)

Last night I watched The Sacrament on Sky. It was billed as horror but the only horrific thing was the realisation I had just wasted 90 minutes of my life. 1/10.

*** *** *** SPOILERS *** *** ***

It basically follows what happened in Jonestown, Guyana. It's poorly told, poorly acted, and leaps from "everything's fine" to "everyone kill themselves" in about one minute without any real build-up or explanation. Scenes which should have been filled with tension, like the two journalists hiding beneath dead bodies while armed guards hunted down survivors, failed to create any drama. None of the characters were particularly believable, especially (Jim Jones character) the Father, and the woman who cuts her daughter's throat instead of making her drink poison. It's filmed in shaky hand-held camera fashion that made me think it was going to be a "found footage" film, but the journalists get out alive so it's really not. Then at the end it says something like "160 people [can't remember the exact number] died in the massacre at Eden Parish. It was the largest mass suicide in recorded history" which I thought was just disrespectful to the 900+ who died in Jonestown.

Don't bother - watch one of the excellent documentaries about the real life event instead.

Crimson Peak at Events. A good story with amazing settings and effects. It was not a horror as I thought it might be but it did have some full on violence. I find those scenes hard to watch so 7/10

I liked the bit towards the end after interviewing the son and discussions about whether he will be able to carry on his fathers legacy when the journalist causually mentions that the son was cooking the last time the Michelin judges turned up...

The Martian (2D) - 8.5/10

This has got lots of good reviews, and deservedly so. I thoroughly enjoyed it, with a good balance of humour and drama, well paced, and with good actors, there's very little I can think of to hold against it. If I had to pick two things to complain about, it was (slightly) too long, and the predictable formula of success and setback seemed a little forced at times. For instance, there is a scene about halfway through where Mission Control are assessing Watney's situation and say something to the effect of "so long as there's no big disaster, he should be fine until the rescue arrives!" And guess what? A big disaster befalls Watney!

I read a week or so ago that many people had watched the film thinking it was based on a true story, and I laughed that anyone could be so ill-informed and gullible to think that we had sent people to Mars already. But there was a point in the film, for a fraction of a second, where I was sucked in by the realism of the film that I could understand how some people might mistake this for another Apollo 13. It's a credit to the writers, the actors, and the production design that you are easily immersed in the story to the point that you can completely suspend disbelief. There are plenty of stories about the science of the film, and I'm sure there are people who will argue whether it's accurate or not. As a "lay person", though, it works really well.

Jurassic World

Not a good movie at all. Yet another case of movie makers thinking special effects and action set pieces are a substitute for a decent script and characters. 5/10 (and I think i am probably being generous).
