New Zealand man filmed trying to ‘body slam’ an orca in actions described as ‘idiotic’ | New Zealand | The Guardian

There are no records of orcas hunting or killing humans. But I'd say this guy was all in for a Darwin Award.

Clearly that guy is a complete idiot. However I think the story has been blown out of proportion. The 3000kg Orca would hardly care about a potential snack landing on the water above him. Yet you hear the likes of Paddy Gower calling for the idiot to be jailed.

All seals, sea lions, dolphins and whales are protected under the Marine Mammals Protection Act 1978. It's an offence to harass, disturb, injure or kill marine mammals.

Hell, orcas are known to organise and tip over yachts.

Is it any wonder our kids get turned off from STEM at an early age.
These "teachers" would not be allowed in Finland.

To have the same skills as a 15 year old in math and science is not a big ask.

Maybe we need less emphasis on soft skills.

Universities pay people with such qualifications even less unless they are high up on the admin side of things or doing well as an academic.

Government cuts, and diverting funds to Destiny Churches Charter Schools will not help.

Funding classes in remedial science and mathematics for those training to be teachers would.
They are not unteachable, and it should have been expected actually.
Given core sciency mathy people have other opportunities in secondary schools and more likely outside teaching.

Hell we hear enough yap about STEM for years, so upskilling should be part of plan.

Reallocating Charter School farmlet funds to something of benefit to all.
But that does not benefit a tiny few and we can misconstrue as tax and spend.
Where Charter School money is magically not everyone's taxes.

Though I did hear of a US Teacher noting how their students career ambitions have changed.
Most saw being an 'influencer', Youtuber, Instagramer etc as a top career to shoot for.

Edited to remove too many expects :-)

It reinforces the case to revoke non-profit status from these mega-churches.

It's summer in the city, and a low of 19, so not for heating.

Methamphetamine producers sometimes use propane tanks to transport anhydrous ammonia, a substance used in the manufacture of meth, but that doesn't sound like the case here.

How generous of you Air New Zealand, never mind that I paid you $2k+ pp for this flight.

Which may mean there's no seats available for self selection without paying for an upsell, like emergency exit/more legroom etc.

This might be a win for you. At checking time you'll possibly get the upsell for free.

P.S. In my experience you need to select your seats as soon as you can to be sure of getting what you want. I go to Oz a couple of times a year for work. As soon as I get notified of my ticket details I go and select my seat. I don’t wait till check in is opened up.

Seems to happen a lot when flights are changed on you. This just happened to me - AirNZ changed a schedule on a future booked flight - my seat selections fell away and it showed the seat selection unavailable message. It was temporary though. A little while later it was available and I was able to select my preferred seats.

Maybe give it a try after a day and if that doesn't work and you're prepared for the long wait, I have sometimes found I can get my seats selected by phoning them.

Agreed, we had actually done that when we first booked and paid for them months ago.  All was fine until I got an email earlier this week saying that the f***ers had bumped us and rerouted with an extra hop (via the dreaded LAX) and the last three-hour leg in economy with a partner airline (we're booked in premium).  We then decided to change dates (meaning we get a longer holiday 🙂) to depart this coming Wednesday.  Once that was confirmed I went to look to reserve seats but there weren't two together so decided to leave it until check-in, we'll see what happens on the day. (It all became a little stressful this week with some other family circumstances and at this stage I'll just be relieved to be sitting on that plane with wheels-up come Wednesday night.)

I'll find out on Tuesday night when we check-in online. So not that long.🙂
