Rikkitic:

I can't stand Neil deGrasse Tyson. I can't stand everything about him. I can't stand his irritating voice. I can't stand the way he guffaws at nothing. I can't stand the way he looks and I can't stand the cringy way he behaves. This frustrates me because I like popular science. I enjoy learning about scientific concepts in lay person's language. I ADORED Carl Sagan. In his honour I forced myself to sit through Tyson's updated version of Cosmos. It wasn't too awful. Tyson does seem to know his stuff and he is barely tolerable when he confines himself to straighforward narration. But when he tries to appeal to 'ordinary folks', he nauseates me. He is not funny. He is not lovable. He is not one of the cool kids. He is not Carl Sagan and he certainly is not Brian Cox. I find his efforts oafish and forced. The harder he tries, the more he grates.

Or maybe it is just me. I don't know. I just know I can't wait until someone replaces him as a populariser of modern science.

"I’m a fan of Neil deGrasse Tyson’s work, but the cat has a point. 🐈"

"I regret to say that we of the F.B.I. are powerless to act in cases of oral-genital intimacy, unless it has in some way obstructed interstate commerce." — J. Edgar Hoover

"Create a society that values material things above all else. Strip it of industry. Raise taxes for the poor and reduce them for the rich and for corporations. Prop up failed financial institutions with public money. Ask for more tax, while vastly reducing public services. Put adverts everywhere, regardless of people's ability to afford the things they advertise. Allow the cost of food and housing to eclipse people's ability to pay for them. Light blue touch paper." — Andrew Maxwell

There's a walking track a few km from my house and sometimes I drive over to the carpark. When I go to leave, the car GPS will invariably show my car on the track itself for a couple of dozen metres until it'll suddenly pop back into the right place. The thing that makes it really strange is that the track is perpendicular, not parallel, to the road!

I suspect that these errors are in fact map errors rather than GPS errors, especially if they're consistent like this.

My own example... in northern California, driving along the interstate, everything was fine until I approached an intersection, at which point the phone would come out with "Turn left in 100 yards to join the interstate". The first time this happened, I blindly followed the GPS and dutifully turned off the interstate, at which point it told me to do a U-turn to join the interstate. When I'd done that, it told me "Turn left in 100 yards to join the interstate" again, directing me back to the exact same road and direction I'd been on beforehand. :( This happened at numerous intersections.

I believe that the map in the phone was wrong, locating the interstate 100 yards or so to the right of where it actually was. In the absence of other roads, my position (apparently 100 yards to the left of the map road) was snapped to the interstate, which was fine. But at every intersection, it would snap me to the nearest road (despite that I was travelling at 70mph at right angles to it), which would be the side road, decide I was off-route, and generate a correction to get back on-route again.

PSA: When flustered by a nonsensical GPS in America and you've done a quick U-turn in a carpark, remember to cross to the right-hand lane of the side road. Also, do not try going up the ramp leading in the direction you want to go... that is the interstate off-ramp.

Booked a cruise with Carnival as a present for my daughter with us since she’s had a rough health patch. I pay the deposit, balance due in 10 days. I am the cruise manager and purchaser. They send an invoice to both the daughter and to me. she gets the invoice and is asking me what it’s all about! Ruined any surprise.

That's because they want their money. So they spray the invoice to everyone, because they can't rely on a single person forgetting to pay...

Still a surprise, just a different kind of surprise. What cruise are you doing?

GoPro who despite their purported polish and R&D budget, allowing a battery to be inserted in both directions, one which is wrong, but the case still closes. Spent 20 minutes wondering if the battery was dead. Such an easy fix and so much confusion could be avoided.

The absolutely (&*^&&( who decided to drop a can, less than 30 cm from our recycling bin, put out on the street this week. It would have been less than no effort to throw it in the actual bin!

To be fair, it would be hard to tell a dead GoPro battery from a fully functioning one.  That's always been their biggest weak point.

Out of Brisbane to Noumea and Vanuatu. Was a last minute inspiration and no cabins left as it is leaving in December and she can’t be away from work at another time so very limiting. Sigh of relief finding a cabin and booking it online. Next day phoned Carnival because it was in Oz$ and I wanted to ask how to pay in $NZ.

Before she hangs up she says, 'so your final payment is 19 September 2026.' I’m telling her she’s made a mistake as the payment date is after the cruise. She keeps repeating the date and 2026 and I’m rolling eyes and thinking what is the matter with this person!

OMG it dawns on me that no wonder I found tickets, it was next years sailing! It was in a list of cruises and I saw the month not the year.

Panic. Apologetically beg for a change to this year. Ended up taking the only balcony cabin left which wasn’t the premium I had booked.

If I hadn’t phoned Carnival, unbearable scenario I would have paid it all and turned up in Brisbane surprise, surprise to nothing.

Borrowed a 2025 Kia Sportage for a week and there were a number of things that annoyed me.

Had initially connected my phone by Bluetooth to play music but with the car loaded with passengers to start a long trip, plugged in by USB and the car starts playing a random song from my iPhone at loud volume.

You have to press a touch button to switch between the aircon and media playback settings. This button is 2nd in or so on the far left of the touch controls. I’d find myself doing a glance-dance between the road and the buttons to get it set right

I couldn’t adjust the air vents to not blow air on my left hand

I’d have the temp set to a nice temperature, say 19degc then find that after jumping in the car the next day, the aircon wouldn’t seem to cool the air despite the car being full of people.  I’d have to dial the temp right down before the ac came on. It has three levels of “Auto” - I guess to please those that hate fan noise?

I’d pause or stop music playing from my phone and the radio would randomly come on, or randomly stop playing. It seemed to be speed related like coming into a town would cause the music to stop or reaching 100kph for a length of time would start it up again. What made me pissed the most of this was once it started playing backstreet boys from a radio station who, as someone that likes NIN, absolutely despises.

Window wiper speed never seemed right.

I tried steering assist and while it worked, it wasn’t for me.  With that off however the car still had a subtle steering assist sensation which would make the car feel like it had lost power steering every time it lost track of the road lines, such as at the end of passing lanes or intersections where the two lanes lose the middle dashed white lines.  Basically anywhere a lane was suddenly larger than normal which you also get immediately after a turn in lane

The cruise control buttons just seem daft and convoluted (but worked well otherwise)

You're not on Atlantis anymore, Duncan Idaho.

Yeah that dual control is such an awful feature. I'm in rentals a week a month and stuff like that drives me nuts. The previous occupant had the air con on some setting and it took me a day to figure out how to toggle the display from media to air con.

In the older version, they have this gorgeous curved display panel that goes all the way from the middle into the instrument panel. But they had a third of it that just displayed a a clock, or the phone type. I know I have a Samsung Flip, why not let me use that screen for something else! They fixed it on the latest versions.

The worst ever lane assist I've had was in an MG HS or something. Petrol SUV, it has genuinely been the only rental car in hundreds that I've wanted to take straight back. The lane assist was extremely aggressive, could only be turned off via touch screen menu (no physical button), defaulted to on every time the car started and would run at road cones thinking I was swerving in road works.

Oh and I couldn't adjust the air con whilst on a phone call as the screen defaults to a call screen!!

Sounds like a similar cruise that I did with my family 5-6 years ago.
If that's the case, you won't be using your cabin for much other than to sleep or get changed anyway.

Have a great time!

My PS5 deciding to download at about 20 Mb/s on a gigabit connection. It's usually much faster than this!

Took our kids on one of their LA - Mexico Baja cruises a few years back - they absolutely loved it. We managed to get interconnecting cabins so it was like having a large suite.

Downloads are usually measured in MB/s, mbps is the line speed.

Are you sure it wasn't 20 MB/s (160 mbps)?

It's annoying me how long it's taking to recover from my latest bout of illness.
I feel worn out by midday, feel like I am running on half lung capacity and now (as a result of a long stretch of antibiotics) have wicked acid stomach and reflux, along with feeling generally rubbish.
I also can't get rid of this nagging cough

Roll on summer and feeling good again.
