Paul1977: Jurassic World

Not a good movie at all. Yet another case of movie makers thinking special effects and action set pieces are a substitute for a decent script and characters. 5/10 (and I think i am probably being generous).

I just watched it again with the kids and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Funny how it's so subjective...in saying that, I switched my brain off at the door.

I just watched it again with the kids and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Funny how it's so subjective...in saying that, I switched my brain off at the door.

I just don't think I should have to turn my brain off to be able to enjoy a movie.

I enjoy fantasy and sci-fi as much as the next guy (probably more), but the story and characters should be believable and make sense within the framework of the imaginary world they are set in.

I'm not just picking on Jurassic World here, so many modern movies have the same kind of problems.

I was watching a documentary yesterday about Back To The Future, and one of the interviewees summed up the modern movie industry very well. I'll paraphrase:

'If any other industry was like the movie industry they would have been shutdown years ago. It's like if 2 out of every 3 cans of tuna had a human finger in it, that factory would be shut down.'

RocknRolla - 8/10 Great gangster movie from Guy Ritchie. Some of the dialog is just hilarious.

One of my favourite movies along with Snatch. Not sure which I prefer.

spectre - bad pre-titles, awful song, worse opening credits in a long time, lacklustre story and an ineffectual villain make for a mediocre bond film.

closer to quantum of solace than skyfall.

6/10

4/10 - if take into account the version i saw which had horrendous crosstalk throughout well lit scenes.

^Felt opposite. It was a great nod to Bond of old, something the last 3 Craig films were sorely lacking.

It's a Bond film through and through. If you're looking for something different you're in the wrong place (not ^you, just in general)

Spectre 8/10

I have to say upfront that I quite enjoyed Spectre, and think it was better than Skyfall in many ways. It finally has a bit more humour and fun to it that was sorely missing in many of the previous Craig films (looking at you, Quantum of Solace!) The car chase with the drop-dead gorgeous DB10 was fun, especially seeing the car "gadgets", though it was a bit of a blur and the Jaguar CX-7 was hard to distinguish from the Aston Martin in some of the fast cuts (or that may just be my poor eyesight).

Christop Waltz did a pretty good job of Bond villain Oberhauser, but he still didn't really have the kind of menace that class Bond villains managed to inject. His scheme also lacked any really potency or villainy, and in that sense it was similar to its immediate predecessors. I get that the new Bond is trying to steer away from the over-the-top megalomaniacal schemes of old, but these villains don't really seem that intimidating. You can see the screenwriters trying to bring back some of the classic tropes (Bond being "hosted" by the villain at the secret lair, all charming and civilised, scheme revealed, Bond saves the day), and there were some subtle references even back to Dr No and the earlier films, but it didn't quite come off. It was still fun, but it felt a little forced rather than being a natural part of the story.

After the film, my wife and I discussed it over dinner and we picked apart of a lot of things we had noticed in the film, most of which I've forgotten (why do schemes always start at "midnight", why does M - the head of MI6 - go into the field and expose himself to danger, why do they insist of trying to wedge the DB5 back into every new Bond film?). But in spite of all those nitpicky things we both really enjoyed it. I'd happily rewatch it.

Kevin Costner playing a creepy serial killer similar to Dexter pretty well. A minor cult classic for some people.

The Dressmaker; A dark "comedy drama" Australian Film with great cast.

Typical Australian "tiny town in middle of nowhere with quirky characters" setting, well-played by the leading cast (Hugo Weaving brilliant!)

Greatly enjoyed. 9/10

I think that it is probably hard to create new villains for Bond movies as the type of villains in previous ones are not relevant today and the ones who are relevant today can't really be made to be bad villains as it would offend someone somewhere

I'm all for the crazy billionaire who wants to rule the world from his secret hideout on a private island submerged below the surface of the ocean :) Bring back more of that! I see enough terrorism and geo-political crap on the news. I want my entertainment to be entertaining, not commentary.

I reckon it would be pretty easy to use Elon Musk, Richard Branson, Jeff Bezos or Mark Zuckerberg as the basis for a villain - they all have more money than they can spend, and between them they have a space programme, several private islands and control over huge chunks of the internet. And most of them would probably enjoy the compliment of being turned into a Bond villain - Branson would probably play the part himself given the chance...
