Agreed, we had actually done that when we first booked and paid for them months ago.  All was fine until I got an email earlier this week saying that the f***ers had bumped us and rerouted with an extra hop (via the dreaded LAX) and the last three-hour leg in economy with a partner airline (we're booked in premium).  We then decided to change dates (meaning we get a longer holiday 🙂) to depart this coming Wednesday.  Once that was confirmed I went to look to reserve seats but there weren't two together so decided to leave it until check-in, we'll see what happens on the day. (It all became a little stressful this week with some other family circumstances and at this stage I'll just be relieved to be sitting on that plane with wheels-up come Wednesday night.)

... you're prepared for the long wait, ...

I'll find out on Tuesday night when we check-in online. So not that long.🙂

Airlines don't bump you for the fun of it.

Welcome to the world of grounded aircraft due to engines not living up to original expectations thus requiring more frequent inspections/overhauls and the lack of worldwide facilities to handle the extra work load all exacerbated by Covid.

kingdragonfly: It's summer in the city, and a low of 19, so not for heating.

Methamphetamine producers sometimes use propane tanks to transport anhydrous ammonia, a substance used in the manufacture of meth, but that doesn't sound like the case here.

So probably just a Darwin Awards honourable mention.

"Create a society that values material things above all else. Strip it of industry. Raise taxes for the poor and reduce them for the rich and for corporations. Prop up failed financial institutions with public money. Ask for more tax, while vastly reducing public services. Maybe give it a try after a day and if that doesn't work and you're prepared for the long wait, I have sometimes found I can get my seats selected by phoning them.

@johno1234.  You were spot on.  Thanks for the tip.  Tried again this morning and hey presto.  Appears to be a pretty full flight so rather pleased now that we've got two seats together.

Did Eric Clapton really think she looked wonderful...or was it after the 15th outfit she tried on and he just wanted to get to the party and get a drink?

My phone just vibrated and the screen turned on, then turned off again (much more quickly than usual when a notification comes in). There are no new notifications shown on the lock screen.

The vibration happened at the exact same time that I received a message from a friend, which I viewed on my laptop... and I have notifications disabled on the phone for that particular messaging service. It's like the phone "forgot" that notifications were turned off, buzzed anyway, then realised it wasn't supposed to have notified me and tried to cover up the evidence.

Whether that's what actually happened is a mystery, but that's what it seemed like!

Work may have been cancelled so that they can do more important things for storm recovery.

WTF?

Chemical release at San Bruno jail sickens nearby schoolchildren

Chemicals being used in a training exercise Tuesday afternoon at the San Francisco jail in San Bruno got out of control, wafted over a hill and sickened 20 schoolchildren and one adult who were left with irritated eyes, throats and noses, officials said.

Then this follow-up today:

Kids sickened by training at nearby S.F. jail may have ingested decades-old chemical weapons

The law enforcement training exercise that unintentionally exposed San Bruno elementary school children to powerful riot-control agents last week may have included chemical weapons that expired decades ago.

A person familiar with the incident said that before the training at the San Francisco County Jail on Moreland Drive in San Bruno, officers from UC Berkeley and UCSF were invited to bring any chemical agents in the campus police forces’ inventory so they could be disposed of during the exercise.

Police with at least one of these departments brought crates of chemical canisters that dated back as far as the 1960s, said the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter. The Chronicle granted anonymity under its confidential sources policy.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/nz-news/350292035/auckland-driver-claims-putting-revenue-ahead-childrens-safety

Looks like advertising revenue trumps child safety when it comes to AT and their bus stops.

The real head-scratcher was when they stated, "We are investigating the layout of the shelter at this location in partnership with oOh! Media, and will consider whether there is an alternative layout or shelter design that could work here. This will include considering whether the advertising panel could be located on the other side of the shelter. One thing we need to consider carefully is if this might then obstruct the view of waiting passengers from seeing their bus coming, and likewise, bus drivers may not be able to see the passengers at the shelter."

No mention in that couple of sentences from AT of safety - simply whether the advertisers would be able to place their ads in a different location and whether the buses can be seen/see passengers. Safety be damned!

TVNZ has a category for movies about "sea creatures".

This is not a movie about a sea creature:

I've decided to block outbound connections from home to domains in Russia or China or TLDs ending in .cn and .ru.

I use rules to block domain resolution based on TLD or the resulting IP address.

I've noticed a never-ending stream of requests for NTP servers in China. I suspected it was one of the Wi-Fi lights in the garage. Nope. It's the Philips Hue box. And you can't change the configuration anywhere.

So I override the domain with a different result, sending the time requests to Cloudflare instead. Here is the resolution before and after I added the rule:

But the interesting one is what happens when you load Aliexpress. I don't use it, but I thought of testing anyway. Good luck sending your details to Russia, comrade.
