Went to make some deposits at a BNZ Smart ATM yesterday via Deposit card, and got the third degree from the machine asking for me to identify myself.

  • please enter your name
  • please enter your phone number
  • please identify yourself with one of

    • Birthday
    • Drivers License
    • Passport
  • Accept the terms and conditions that say you are depositing money from legal sources.

Ok, we can take your money now.

I had 3 deposits to make, and had to enter this information every single time.  That effectively doubled the time required.

Sounds ridiculous but there could be reasons. What is 'Deposit card'? Do you bank with BNZ and were you depositing to your account/s?

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

It's seemingly what the people wanted.

On another small annoyance. I've had my XPS laptop for six or seven years and it's been brilliant. But it felt like almost from year one that I was being warned about not being able to upgrade to Windows 11. I kept thinking. I've only just got this laptop, how is this possible?

It might be my imagination but I thought most banks won't allow cash deposits into an account that isn't your own now?

Just received an email with shipping details for arrival in the next couple of days.

Email was to my gmail account that is unique to me. I haven't ordered anything recently. It's coming from Christchurch.

I have no idea what it is, or who it's from - just that it's on its way.

Annoying.

Business deposit cards allows an employee to deposit cash outside core banking hours without giving the a card with a PIN where funds could also be withdrawn.

I'm the treasurer for a club/society.  The society banks with BNZ.  Was depositing to their account.  Hence multiple deposits to make the accounting clean.  i.e. membership fees vs dinner tickets etc.

The deposit card lets you do exactly that.  Like the standard ATM/EFTPOS card, it is tied to a specific bank account, but won't let you withdraw money from that account, only deposit it.  Its a standard 'small business' convenience/control feature.  It saves time interacting with the machine because you no longer have to type in the a/c number every time, but limits what you can 'do' with it.

For context, I have been Treasurer for several years, and have gone through the hoopla of identifying myself to the bank several times for Anti Money Laundering compliance purposes.  Depositing via ATM is great for me because I don't need to visit the bank during 'business hours'.  But this extra security step is going to be quite annoying if I have to do it every f***ing time.

I don't have a fondness for cash, the sooner it's gone the better for me but appreciate that's not for everyone. How hard would it be to get everyone to pay directly into an account instead?

I envision a surcharge for cash payments in retail in one day.

Cash has been made too difficult to use with the BS AML laws that places have to follow.

People getting questioned by a bank for using a bank is absurd but because they tacked terrorism on the name people lap up with all the govern me harder daddy BS you hear them excusing it over.

100% agree with you on this, but realistically I don't think that will happen for another 15-20 years at least.

Working towards it though - probably about 60-70% of transactions that used to be cash are now electronic, and we are always wanting to move in that direction.

There are still businesses around that manage to legally deal in cash, including large amounts > $10k but it is a PITA. I know of one personally that gets so much cash in they have a counting machine for it. Their main AML requirement to stay out of jail is to capture the ID of anyone paying cash.

Some large cash acceptors install smart safes, so that they can simply recycle it into their float for next day, or have it "banked" as it's put in and collected by a security firm on a regular basis.

I have just spent the day drilling out embedded nails from the remnants of a treehouse that was brought down. The treehouse was built with youthful enthusiasm and lots of nails. LOTS OF NAILS!

I have never seen so many nails. They are everywhere. This treehouse was built to last. Except it didn’t. Rain got in and the wood swelled and the nails rusted. It is like they are welded in. The ones that could be extracted have been. The rest have to be painstakingly drilled out. It is a long, difficult, tedious job. Each one is worse than the last. But it has to be done. Some of the wood can be reclaimed. Some is rotten and will go on the fire. But all of it has to be free of metal. It is the chore from Hell and it really, really annoys me!

p.s.: I just posted this by accident in the W.T.F. thread and had to move it. That annoys me too.

p.p.s.: My post got censored. That REALLY annoys me!

I can’t imagine drilling out nails as so slow and time consuming. I have only ever needed to do drill out broken off screws and bolts. I’ve probably pulled a thousand out with a claw hammer or crowbar after knocking them out a little from the pointy end. But if the nail head was rusted off I would just saw close around it and if necessary dig it out. I have no issues burning wood with the odd nail in it.

Not good here on the farm with my karma. If there is a nail anywhere, the Skill saw will find it. If I burn the wood, the nails will find their way from the burn site into every tyre on the property. I speak from long experience.

Haha! Was recently processing some old Rimu beams into a table and had to rip into planks then plane them. There were some old spikes that escaped my careful search and got in my way. I managed to extract them all eventually - some I had to chisel around so I could get a tool similar to these onto them: https://www.mitre10.co.nz/shop/crescent-nail-puller-280mm/p/382322
