It's quite common to load all your domains from login screens so that you can get the cookies set for them all. It's something Amazon don't do which really annoys me so I have to log in on every single one manually when I change device etc.

Common? Sure.

If you still want to have some of your data sent to Russia, sure.

Which is one of the reasons I am looking at HomeKit/Matter for my "smart home" stuff as "phone home" is not an option I believe.

freitasm:

I've decided to block outbound connections from home to domains in Russia or China or TLDs ending in .cn and .ru.

I use rules to block domain resolution based on TLD or the resulting IP address.

I've noticed a never-ending stream of requests for NTP servers in China. I suspected it was one of the Wi-Fi lights in the garage. Nope. It's the Philips Hue box. And you can't change the configuration anywhere.

So I override the domain with a different result, sending the time requests to Cloudflare instead. Here is the resolution before and after I added the rule:

But the interesting one is what happens when you load Aliexpress. I don't use it, but I thought of testing anyway. Good luck sending your details to Russia, comrade.

I suppose .kp could be next on the list, given how much cyber-crime is propping up that regime. Unless they happen to disguise their tracks.

"Create a society that values material things above all else. Strip it of industry. Raise taxes for the poor and reduce them for the rich and for corporations. Prop up failed financial institutions with public money. Ask for more tax, while vastly reducing public services. Put adverts everywhere, regardless of people's ability to afford the things they advertise. Allow the cost of food and housing to eclipse people's ability to pay for them. Light blue touch paper." — Andrew Maxwell

OK it's click-bait.

New York Post: Remote Amazon tribe finally connects to internet — only to wind up hooked on porn, social media

A reclusive tribe in the Amazon finally got hooked up to the internet, thanks to Elon Musk — only to be torn apart by social media and pornography addiction, elders complain.

Brazil’s 2,000-member Marubo tribe has been left bitterly divided by the arrival of the Tesla founder’s Starlink service nine months ago, which connected the remote rainforest community along the Ituí River to the web for the first time.

“When it arrived, everyone was happy,” Tsainama Marubo, 73, told The New York Times.

“But now, things have gotten worse. Young people have gotten lazy because of the internet, they’re learning the ways of the white people.”

The "Institute for Justice" is a bit of a strange non-profit. They are primarily libertarians, and somewhat tied to the controversial American "Federalist Society" which favored overturning Roe v. Wade, among other conservative positions.

However State of New Jersey policy is a little scary.

Institute for Justice: American state doubles down on keeping baby blood, Parents vow to continue lawsuit
...
All 50 states and the District of Columbia draw blood from newborn babies to test for diseases.

What makes New Jersey’s program uniquely bad is that it does not seek informed consent from parents to keep the blood after that testing is complete; instead, it holds onto the blood spot for 23 years without parental permission.

New Jersey law also gives the Department of Health complete discretion to turn these blood samples over to police, private third parties, or other government agencies.

My work computer was "upgraded" to Windows 11 last night, and one of the first things that happened this morning was... it randomly decided to open Visual Studio, and a project that I haven't touched in months.

It's a mystery, but I have more pressing matters, like trying to figure out where my quick launch menu has gone.

Edit: I had to install "ExplorerPatcher" to actually make things usable. Heaven forbid that I'd want the taskbar to actually have some tasks on it.

freitasm: I've noticed a never-ending stream of requests for NTP servers in China.

I think it's an unwritten requirement that every piece of IoS you install in your house absolutely hammers NTP servers.  I've seen devices - not from China - that send an NTP request every 30 seconds, 24/7.

One of the nice things that Firewallas do is intercept NTP and reply locally, so the NTP hammering never leaves your local network.  Otherwise if you're running a software-based firewall you can set this up yourself using iptables or similar.

I'd encourage you to move away from that tool, it's been marked for death at MS, they intend to block it moving forward.

Have a look at Start 11, it's awesome.

Mrs Floyd and I are road-tripping in Canada at the moment. (Did you see my bear photos?)  When we picked up the rental car the paperwork said it came with two keyfobs.  Oh, that’s handy, we can carry one each just in case one of them gets lost we will still be mobile.  (Never mind what Hertz would charge us for a replacement).  This is what we were then given:

In case it’s not clear from the photo, the keyring is crimped so that individual items can’t be removed from it.  (It’s actually one of those where the physical key unslots from the fob itself so we’ve done that as a workaround, but still.)

Sometimes I use big words I don't always fully understand in an effort to make myself sound more photosynthesis.

Had exactly the same thing when we were there last year. Oddly when we were in a hardware store standing by the pliers on display one fell off the wall and miraculously cut through the cable. 😏

Nothing was said when we returned the car with two separate keys.

Have fun up there mate, very jealous.

I'm surprised they didn't accuse you of vandalism and charge you the excess AND the daily charge for the car until it was fixed!

To be fair the rep said we could cut it but we didn’t have the tool to do it until we hit a Walmart.

There was a serious issue with our vehicle at 120kph (legal speed limit on the Coquihalla) so we spent some time explaining that when we dropped it off. There were no extra fees.
