Some people I know who are of an elderly disposition persist in using old-style SMS ‘txt spk’ on platforms like Apple Messages.

Perhaps they had trouble adapting to it originally. Then they mastered it - and even though history has left it behind, they just can’t let it go. Looks weird and awkward now.

I noticed yesterday at the GP a notice saying they were using AI for patients notes. Is this not a breach of our privacy as patients?

My understanding is that GPs use them to transcribe and summarise the consultation with the patient, something they previously used to do by hand. I doubt if any identifiable information is sent to the AI doing the summarising, and personally I'm ok with it if it means the GPs can see more people.

Tipping Point replacing The Chase before the news.

Tipping Point belongs in the spot that the unemployed watch TV, not in the evening prior to the news coming on.  It's a completely different class to The Chase.  Something about that game infuriates me.  The class of questions says it all.

Looks to be only when there is live cricket broadcast and to allow Te Karere to fit in the schedule.  When there is no cricket appears to be The Chase at 17:00 as per what we're used to.

I think it's not showing at 17:00 because the so-called The Chase New Zealand is currently on at 19:30 - and they don't want to show two Chases in one evening.

I am annoyed by the requirement of some web sites for passwords that contain upper case letters, numbers and special characters. I recently got into an argument with the security people at Grey Power Electricity over this matter. They insist that this meets best practice.

I pointed out that Grey Power serves the elderly and old people often have memory issues so they write things down that they may forget. I said that stringing together three things already memorised (like pet name, grandchild’s name, and birthdate) would be much more secure but this was rejected.

So I asked Perplexity and this is what it said:

“The most authoritative and widely recognized guideline for passwords is from the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), specifically the NIST Special Publication 800-63B "Digital Identity Guidelines." Recent versions of these guidelines emphasize password length over complexity and explicitly recommend not imposing composition rules like mandatory uppercase letters, numbers, and symbols. Instead, NIST advises:
·    Minimum length of 8 characters (user-created)
·    Allowing all ASCII and Unicode characters, including spaces and emojis
·    Checking passwords against lists of commonly compromised ones
·    Eliminating mandated complexity requirements because they often lead to predictability and poor password choices

“There is no single international standard mandating uppercase, number, and special character requirements as a rule. Many websites still use this policy because of legacy practices or perceived security benefits, but modern best practice as recommended by NIST and supported by organizations like OWASP is to favor longer, user-friendly passphrases without forced complexity.

“So, while complexity rules are common in password policies, they have no formal universal name or international standard backing, and the current trend in cybersecurity is moving away from strict composition requirements toward promoting long, memorable, and checked passwords.”

I tend to agree with you on that. However I like The Chase and will give it a go - even though I strongly disagree with TVNZ's and ITV's cynical approach. They call it 'The Chase NZ' but it was filmed in Oz and only NZ'ers living in Oz were eligible to be on it.

This subject needs its own thread as it’s quite serious. Did you know that AI listens to the entire appointment, yes it makes summary notes plus input from AI which is sometimes wrong. Worse this information gets sent to the USA.

Note the video is by Proton, who sells privacy products, so they are inclined to use worst case scenarios.

But fundamentally they are correct.

Proton is from Switzerland and a non profit organisation is behind it. Their eMail service stores data end-to-end encrypted and they don‘t own the keys. So when the US or any other government wants to have it (there were some famous French requests - worst case was already very present), they only get it by a Swiss court order and … well - encrypted - because they don‘t own any key. You can set up a yubikey as 2FA and here we go. Much for the average user but you can ask me, who has an account for test purposes since nearly a decade. So far I think this is the eMail service I would trust the most of all in the world (yes, I know the „unbreachable“ Enigma story very detailed - try it). It’s audited, you can access it by TOR and pay with bitcoins.

But the weak point is still your computer, remember … keylogger.

BTW: they sued Apple by June this year … 😉

I'm naming and shaming Bridgestone. Just because I got new tyres a couple of months ago, I'm now on their mailing list. Unsubscribing told me "unsubscribe successful", and then a month later I got another promotional message from them.

I hate the way companies think they can spam you once you buy one thing.

And how many tyres do you need anyway?

Put One NZ on this then. They send marketing SMS with no option to unsubscribe. And they are not about the service (which would be excluded from unsubscribe option) but purely promotional.

That depends on the terms of service for the service they are using. Imo it's unlikely any NZ practice will use services that are not appropriate for NZ privacy law.

Not recent news.

And it’s not even a real series - just four episodes. Count ‘em. Four.

Tinkerisk: Proton is from Switzerland and a non profit organisation is behind it. Their eMail service....

I don't want to get into a long discussion about Proton mail (now just called "Proton").

Personally it's something I'd avoid for a primary email account or Small Office/Home Office, SOHO.

Some services block Proton addresses, ironically because they are very security conscience: Proton allows anonymous sign-ups. In other words, email accounts with no phone or identity verification.

Somewhat ironically again you'd think spammers, scammers, and fraudsters would use Proton every time. But it's not unusual for entire Proton domains to occasionally end up on blacklists. Obviously criminals want to get to victims, which necessitates getting into the "Inbox" not the "Spam" folder.

While you it may be unfair, corporate filters and online platforms sometimes automatically flag Proton emails as “high-risk” or “unverified”.

If you'd like to discuss Proton, please start a new thread.
