It's a bit of a puzzle that some people have a lot of problems with Linux across multiple machines while others have few or no problems across multiple machines.

No idea. Windows runs smoothly for me in Virtual Box under Linux Mint (it’s ubuntu based!) + Cinnamon on my ultra 7 desktop PC. Some Windows programmes also run directly under Linux with Wine (without any Windows). I've never tried it the other way round, as I wanted to get rid of Windows for the most use cases, not Linux.

VMware has been dead to me since the ESXi restrictions, and I only use Proxmox or Docker on headless servers and then with Ubuntu without the desktop.

Saw a headline that 780K people had switched from W10 to Zorin Desktop Linux. I have long hated desktop linux because it's never as good as either Windows or Mac for 'just works', but it had been at least 4 years since I last tried it. I have been considering ditching my older synology nas and just running what runs on it as containers in something linux something, and thought I'd take a look.

Nope, it's still finicky, slower than default windows, basic things like trying to get a remote access connection to it caused wayland to mess it up, had to switch to KDE, then it works, nek minnit, another error. Same old Desktop Linux. Decided to see if it was just that one distro, nope it's worse with Kunbuntu which takes 30 minutes of fiddling with extra cmd line options to get the INSTALLER to run.

It's 2025! Surely they know people are virtualising their distros on one of the 2 top hypervisors?! Surely, they test and make sure it works flawlessly.

Sigh.

Linux is a SERVER OS. It's brillant at that.

If you’re wanting Linux to replace the container part of a NAS I wouldn’t use a desktop version of Linux. I’d be looking at something designed to be used as a server os and run docker.

That's unsurprising. There are plenty of folks here with decades of Linux experience and know every nook and cranny of it. But most users would expect to just install and run it with their user knowledge of Windows and macOS. That's where the problem is. Setup and configuration, software updates and so on are just not as straightforward as they might be and as there are multiple distros they are not standardised. Generally you have to know command line commands and arguments. It's a big barrier to non-Linux or non-technical people.

IMHO desktop Linux is miles away from being a suitable mass market replacement for Windows and MacOS. It's like giving someone a HTPC instead of a Sky decoder.

It seems to me that experts are talking about Linux (Mint) here without ever having seen or installed it. There are exactly zero CLI commands to enter for installation.

To fix it, requires a call, call in... 'your wait may be over 1 hour'. Ah, NOPE.

Also, get your *&^$ together, there is no excuse for ongoing 1 hour wait times. Occasional wait times if there is an outage, but if you are making customers wait 1 hour, you don't have enough resources on the phones.

Every call centre: "We are experiencing an excessive number of calls"

Every day. All day. And yet, no plans to make it better for customers.

A change in family circumstances means I have to make calls to at least half a dozen agencies and companies.

I've noticed some have added 'be kind and respectful to our staff' to their IVR scripts.

Whilst I would never be disrespectful to any rep (not sure I'm always kind, but never rude) this is a rather pathetic and tragic way to acknowledge that their service is essentially rubbish. How about them showing some respect for their callers' time, particularly if they are paying customers.

(Name and shame: Mercury Energy >120minutes, WINZ >30 minutes).

Sometimes I use big words I don't always fully understand in an effort to make myself sound more photosynthesis.

Being time poor, I don't want something I need to spend ages learning, maintaining and supporting. I may just end up with another Synology, it just works.

Dropping my medication container and spilling the entire contents on the floor so that the dinning room floor is covered with pills. They will have to sit there and think about what they did until my wife gets home tonight as I tried and cannot get down there to pick them up. So annoying

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Shudder. I find the callback option is best. I think there's a trend for NZ companies to provide local call centers with pretty good quality in NZ hours and callback tends to work well in that context. After NZ hours I think there's a trend to outsource to some very low quality multiple client type operations where there's a high risk of nonsense to meet the required metric.

Genesis Energy also very bad for wait times.

Can confirm though, call back works and they always call back at the time I've booked (though, sometimes the earliest time I can get is more than 24 hours away).

The prices they charge, you'd think they could afford more CSRs?

Unraid is probably in the same category for that level of set and go

It advertises support for all the platforms and features you're looking for. I'm not a user.

Don't play golf (anymore) and rarely drink.
I think it's repeated strain from lifting my heavy eBike onto and off the bike rack.
