2 Years ago we paid a LOT of money to have a leak in our bathroom fixed.

It has recurred and the Plumber (a master plumber) is now saying that only the work he did is covered, and that all the pipes and tap work and everything else won't be covered.

I am not really sure why he thinks we would have agreed to spend 15K on a new shower (because of a supposed membrane failure) if that wasn't the (entire) fix.

Legally, I don't think he has a leg to stand on, but it's just another hassle of trades people trying to not meet their obligations under law.

Was there an insurance claim involved?

Yes, but they only over incidental damage, it was our job to remediate the issue that caused the damage (as is standard of insurance policies).

What a nightmare. Presumably his perspective is he was contracted to fix a membrane failure only and not asked to resolve anything else.

That was his initial gambit, along with the fact if he opened the ceiling up to investigate he wasn't responsible for any remedial costs.

I disabused him of that notion quite quickly and I don't believe he has a defence of being asked to fix the shower only, as any reasonable and responsible trades person would satisfy themselves that was the problem. If it wasn't that, then we are, as I understand it, due a refund for the cost of the shower.

He was called by the insurance company to investigate the cause of the leak is my understanding, I couldn't imagine any other reason for him being called out.

The best path back might be through the insurance company and let them sort it out. Chances are they'll send him around and he'll bill them (next step between them) and that's probably what they'll expect in this scenario, and probably the insurance company will consider it work for the original claim not a new claim. Like you say, the insurance company ordered the work and is essentially responsible for it [not you] whatever it might have been

Having to buy 20m of compressed air hose when I only need 30cm. I now have 19.7m of hose which I will now hold onto for at least 8 years before throwing it away. I will then immediately need 30cm of compressed air hose.

Could you have gone to a tech or service place where they use that hose and asked them to sell you a short length?

Could I have? Sure. Was it worth another two hours of my time driving around industrial areas trying to find one? Absolutely not. It’s roughly $20 worth of hose.

Microsoft Onedrive

Kicking, screaming, I upgraded my last Windows 10 to 11 on an old exisiting PC.

Microsoft OneDrive; it's impossible to remove this cloud storage completely from Windows.

I eventually gave up, as a OneDrive icon will apparantly always live in File Explorer / Windows Explorer

At one point literally all my drives letters C:, D: disappeared, leaving only One Drive standing.

I've been using Windows since 1990, Windows 3.0. I have more Microsoft certifications, including Azure, than you can shake a stick at.

I used Chatgpt assistance, the conversation had these counts (many were multiple attempts)
  • 17 printed A4 pages
  • 3,556 words
  • 56 registry
  • 30 Group policies
  • 6 PowerShell
  • 2 loading/creating new extended policies (ADMX/ADML)
  • 2 visits to Windows controls
A thing I learned is 24H2 has changed Explorer's "This PC" rendering, and also moved Group Policy's, GPEdit, setting around it to folders called "Previous versions"

.

That's right up there with Windows trying to force me to use it's backup tool to OneDrive every other update.

Thanks, but I'll stick with my paid 3rd party back up tools backing up to my NAS and then to a paid 3rd party cloud storage system.

Yes MS, I know it's important to backup my data, that's why I do.  Just not with you.

Another annoying thing on Windows: I've completed setup. Done. Still, every few months it shows a fullscreen dialog asking me if I want to setup OneDrive (already done), the advantages of a Microsoft 365 subscription (already have it) and then saying "All done!"

It was done before. No need to keep pestering.

One of the tenets of a good operating system is that it stays out of your way, and lets (usually third-party) apps be the main focus. Windows (and, increasingly, MacOS) takes the opposite tactic and gets in your face as much as possible.

Windows core components uses XAML heavily, stuff even your grandma even uses.

Microsoft admit Windows 11 24H2 Core Features are broken! (Start Menu, Taskbar, Explorer, etc.)

They got done for deceptive advertising. Turns out they only recommended hotels that paid them a fee. Maybe the carpet bombing is an attempt to compensate the loss.

Same thing happened to Youi and they left our channels never to return. Now they just crap on Australia FTA, like a flock of diarrheac swallows.
