Behodar:

I just tried to register on a website run by a major international company. The first step is to enter my name. It doesn't accept it, telling me that it's "not valid".

Get that all the time because of a - in the surname. Friend had sites tell them that there was minimum lengths for names which is absurd when Le is a valid name.

I've seen this article in the past, and I think it's probably due for a re-read.

In my particular case I attempted to register using a nickname, although it's a nickname that's morphing into becoming my real name (and is not the same as my Geekzone username). I've been using it for a couple of years now and this is the first site I've run into that's rejected it outright.

Whether it's domestic or international has nothing to do with it. Our very own Air NZ refuses to accept the name on my passport so I have to write it how they want it. Before you say it's a global issue, other airlines refuse the Air NZ variation and expect yet another. So i can travel on a passport with name A, ticketed by Air NZ on name B and further ticketed by other airlines on name C.

Thankfully the airlines/passport/border control/etc systems are all fairly forgiving of similar names and I haven't run into issues yet. Even rebookings from QF to NZ on the same ticket resulted in the interesting case of me having to claim airpoints under a slightly different name but all went fine without any manual interventions.

Another domestic example is Spark. Won't accept my name so I use the same variation as Air NZ which work fine.

AIUI the passport/ticket name checking imply removes/ignores any hyphens, apostrophes or other punctuation in the name.

Air New Zealand is not the only website that won't accept the correct spelling of my Irish surname.

The double capitals separated by an apostrophe is the problem, so O'Xyz becomes Oxyz.

I topped up Wise in the usual way by sending money to my Wise account from my bank. I get the following response.

You sent this money to us before setting up a transfer in your Wise Account, so we didn’t know where to send it, we’ve added it to your account, and it’s ready to use. Next time, please set up a transfer first. This tells us what you want us to do with your money and helps avoid any delays or refunds.

What are they on about? I don’t want to transfer the money anywhere. I want it in my account to spend.

Wise again. Friend asked me to transfer some money to Europe for sick brother. Not wanting to send a large amount without certainty it’s received, I do a test $10 transfer that cost me $1 and after I send it, app tells me it will take three days. Is this normal for Europe? I can transfer to Australia in minutes.

I can't help with the European case but when I send money to family in Brazil there's no delay. Basically I hit SEND and the next page says "Done, money is in their account."

I guess it all depends on how evolved the banking system is in each country.

Closely related: the Sc#nthorpe problem, where lazily programmed cuss filters blocked an entire English town from signing up to AOL. And my initial attempts to post this got caught out on this very forum; even the Wiki link itself isn't "clean" enough.

Did you set up a "I'm wanting to add X dollars to here" in the app?
Or just send them money to your account#? That might be what they're on about here.

i.e. - you've sent them money out of the blue without 'telling' them in advance to expect it.

Yes - you want it in your account.  In which currency/bucket?
If you wanted Euros or Aus rather than NZ...

My experience with Wise to date has been great.   If the money is already in the currency that you want to send it in, then the bank transfers are 'free' and 'instantaneous'.
But it will then be up to the bank on the other end to process it...

Staying appropriately hydrated.

I know I'm 50 now and my bladder isn't as robust as it used to be but I just can't get it right. I'm either dehydrated leading to headaches or running to the toilet every 15mins. There doesn't seem to be a just right quantity of water to drink.

Have had four updates telling me money has been sent and the other bank is the holdup. 9 pm and still no confirmation it has arrived. At least it’s not three days so far. My other transfers take minutes. Waiting for that confirmation before I send a larger amount.

Unsure why this happened. I’ve made a direct payment to Wise from my bank many times before and it always goes into NZ$ account ready for spending. No questions. Why suddenly now would they need to know to expect it.

It can be a variable feast sending money internationally. Sometimes it's within an hour, sometimes it's 3-5 days.
