I doubt that pine would need a pilot hole. Do they need to be 6G? That would likely end up being Robertson #1. Long thread in a wood screw is likely to be countersunk head hinge screw. Pan head long thread likely to be self tapping sheet metal screw.

Yeah but the job is so much faster if they can just be driven in without pre-drilling a pilot hole.

I tend to agree. The new facia board is pine so pretty soft - I don't think it will split or be a problem. 6g is from the Marley spec and smaller the better as long as it is strong enough. Robertson heads are so handy for holding the screw on the driver bit.

Searching on Bunnings/Mitre10 website. These guys are spending millions and millions on their IT and websites. Yet you cannot do a structured search e.g. for screw/stainless/timber/long thread/8g/20mm

And a free text search is barely better than random results.

Absolutely spot on. Have been wrestling with this for years and particularly in the past few days. As an example, was looking on the Bunnings site for a hot melt glue gun - to be part of son's Christmas presents.

I know they have about ten different models - but do you think I could get the search to show me them all? Not a chance. Some - but not all. However, no matter how I phrased my search, it insisted on showing me about a hundred Bowmac hot dip galvanized structural brackets.

When you type something into Search, it gives you suggested search words or phrases. When you select one that looks appropriate, it still doesn't show expected or useful results. Totally bloody useless.

And I know the M10 site is no better.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

8G is slightly tight in the bracket but has the common #2 square drive.

I don't use the bracket slots for adjustment so don't need the screw to be loose fit. So long as brackets follow the string line minor variation helps stop the gutter buzzing in wind.

From test fitting I think I can align the right hand end bracket with the top of the fascia. There's a tad over 2.5m of spouting so 5 spans of 500mm, 6 brackets and a 10mm fall so rather than a string line am just planning to set a bracket every 500mm and drop each one down 2mm lower than the last. Does that make sense?

I used that theory.  Turns out the fascia wasn't level so measuring the bracket position based on the fascia bottom edge did not have the intended result in all cases.  Rookie mistake on my account.

So long as fascia is level. I've got one about that length where gutter drops with respect to roofing but has ended up almost level. Sometimes the outlet has to be at a particular end and getting fall would drop gutter too far below edge of roof.

Good point there and same from Geoff... The outlet has to be on the left as there's no downpipe to connect to on the right.

I installed the fascia myself but it was all measured against the existing bearer so never considered the levelness of it. So far the rest of the house has been very square and level.

Just put my 2m spirit level on the fascia - the bubble is in the middle of the middle - beautiful!

They knew how to build them right in 1964.

Excellent work folks, but let's take any further discussion on guttering to the DIY sub-forum, please? Cheers and thanks!

The animations in iOS 26. I don’t need wishy washy fade ins or whatever. Just give me a simple interface that does the action I’ve tapped on.

I’d be happy if it looked like windows 95 with all the display performance options turned off.

People who use a tea towel as a hand towel. No thought about it being used later on to dry eating utensils etc.

Not so much annoy as more of a facepalm.

Text from a random 4 digit short code telling me their Xmas shut down dates and thanking me for my business.

Just neglected the minor detail of who it was from.

Edit: Update:

13 minutes later a repeat of the text but with the Company name at the bottom.

Billions of dollars in the bank and thousands of engineers working on the project and they can't get a damn button to appear on a ribbon in an email client. Makes sense... /s
