johno1234: Forest & Bird, or someone similar were setup in the foyer at the Meadowbank Woolworths the other day. It's like running a gauntlet. Sadly many of the charity and conservation groups are politically partisan these days - a reason I walk past them.

If you try to give those a donation they will refuse. Those companies are all about the comission on a regular direct debit donation. The workers get an hourly rate plus some kind of bonus. I'm not entirely opposed to that but it feels overused.

I understand why charities do it. It is very tempting for them and the money flows like magic.

When I see actual volunteers collecting on the street like womens refuge or actually promoting conservation information I donate every time.

I got accosted by someone a while ago and one of the first things I asked was whether I could do a one-off donation. "Yes, of course you can." I agree to proceed, then he says "OK, so here are our monthly options." I remind him that I just want to do a one-off. "Oh you can't do that."

Thanks for wasting my time.

Meanwhile when some people were quietly sitting there with some information pamphlets and a donation bucket, I happily put a large note in there.

Mildly irritating and amusing at the same time - people who repeatedly hammer the pedestrian crossing button thinking it will make the crossing light turn green.

It will if you hammer it for long enough!

You need to angrily tell them that they have just reset the timer!

Yeah, it doesn’t work for pedestrian crossings - but it does for elevators.

PBTech now tell us that their supplier can't give an availability date for the weather station ordered before Christmas. They say hopefully they will get stock in February.

They still have it on their website as local pick up on 2nd Feb or shipping from 27th Jan.

Isn't that an illegal selling tactic that the Commerce Commission calls "bait advertising"?

I don't think so. It appears to me they are advertising a product with an expected availability based on their expectations of when it will come into stock. This is not an unusual situation. In fact it's not too far different from what happens with pre orders for new products, like mobile phones etc.

I'm at risk of losing my sh*t if another person in the office says the word 'staycation' again.

That word does my head in.

Apparently it dates back to the 1940s, but I don't think I'd ever heard it until Covid.

That really baffles me. THere's some odd psychology in there surely. They must think the person who is already waiting is such an idiot that they haven't already thought to press the button, even though the light is illuminated. They must be thinking "I'll fix this problem with my superior pressing abilities."

Then there are the people that stand there without having pressed the button at all.

That reminds me of the car drivers that don't go close enough to traffic lights to trigger the loop in the road.

I have set Teams to "do not disturb". So far it has disturbed me three [edit: eight] times with a message telling me that I have DND turned on.

It gets even better. It defaults to switching DND back off again after 24 hours. There's a "Duration" feature, which lets you pick a custom date. This custom date is then ignored, and it turns itself off after 24 hours again.
