School holidays are good for that kind of thing.

True but you would think they would tailor the hour more to their main age group or allow online bookings (you can get a passport online after all).

No, that would be too helpful. Also, I think I read something somewhere (that's your reference right there) that bookings are not allowed by law.

I know what you mean tho. I've been through this recently with my eldest and with opening hours, closed branches and school it was a bit tricky to find a suitable weekday.

God bless covid for delivering some LFH days , taken as an opportunity to sit his learners without a big queue.

My daughter is trying to arrange the theory test required to get her learners licence in Blenheim.  To state the obvious, a lot of the people booking in for these tests are 16 and attend school.

You can only book in person, and in Blenheim you can only make bookings between the hours of 10:00am and 4:00pm, Monday to Friday.  And they don't let anyone join the queue after 3:30pm.

You couldn't write this stuff.

My son just sat (and failed) his restricted test - he waited two months for an appointment and then when he failed he tried to rebook immediately. First available time - mid-July!!!

There should be a better system.

He needs to keep his eye open for cancellations - free slots often come up a few days out.

Yup - he's logging in at 7am every day and again at 9pm. Apparently those are the "sweet spot" for cancellations according to the Teen Gossip Machine.

There is a wait of over 12 months to get a firearms license at the moment - July doesn't seem too bad to be honest!

Friend of mine's wife is currently caught up in that delay, apparently "because it's cheaper than a divorce lawyer" isn't an acceptable answer. Who knew...

Saw this on aliexpress. Its a dummy phone charger to store your valuable jewellery in. The plug side still has the pins and contacts on the inside of it. Right by the worst photoshop job I have seen in a while of jewellery. Which conducts. So this charger is made to pop open easily, have conductive things put inside it, and can go into an electrical outlet.

Anyone see any reason why this would be a bad idea? They list an AU plug one as well. Wonder if it will actually be one, or they will just ship the US plug one and a terrible travel adapter. They want $4.something for it which is more than a junk real charger costs on there. Not sure I will bother ordering one.

The funny thing is, because of its very portable (and presumably useful) nature, a charger is likely to be stolen anyway - particularly if it's kids or simple opportunists doing the burglary.

I'm a geek, a gamer, a dad, a Quic user, and an IT Professional. I have a full rack home lab, size 15 feet, an epic beard and Asperger's. Reminds me of http://www.fiftythree.org/etherkiller/

The struggle is real.  I once plugged an ISDN connection into the RS232 console port (both RJ45) of a PRI gateway.  Yes, it fried it.  (Fortunately thanks to the component level repair guys it was an easy fix, all they had to do was replace the RS232-TTL converter).

Did Eric Clapton really think she looked wonderful...or was it after the 15th outfit she tried on and he just wanted to get to the party and get a drink?

Zanmai tactical scissors. Two W T F's in one, (1) they're $258, and (2) they're tactical. Scissors.

Maybe the idea is that they can be used against Russian tanks, but I have my doubts...

Did you check their other listings? How about the Nigara Hamono Blue2 Troll Killer at $2,979. Apparently it's a "kitchen" knife!

Hadn't looked until now but now that I have I noticed that they have a pile of other knives in the $500-1.5k range, and 100% positive feedback. Whoever's buying these hand-forged meteoric iron zombie killer knives sure is happy about paying those prices for them.

This morning an advert for sign language on channel three featuring a policeman in the background wrestling with what appears to be a dishevelled possibly homeless person while constantly yelling for help from policeman 2 who is calmly standing in the foreground extolling the virtues of learning sign language. He finished the spiel and went back to help the other policeman subdue the man and take him away.

Watching the background tussle between the police and the man was disturbing, irrelevant and did nothing to encourage learning sign language. Who dreams up such adverts.

The background policeman should've yelled in sign language.

To edit a file as hex in vim, the command is ":%!xxd". Dunno why they even put that in the help, it's so intuitively obvious.

(Yes, I know what it's doing, and it's still a dumb way to do it, especially if you don't know what's actually going on and that you need to (a) edit it in a very, very specific form and (b) do a ":%!xxd -r" afterwards to get your file back).
