MadEngineer:

People that set up systems to send emails purporting to come from themselves on third party services who then wonder why their emails are spf rejected

This is not small.

I was out on my motorcycle today. I did about 100km and was within metres of home when…

The road onto which our gate exits is a very straight 100 Kmh road. There was a single vehicle following me and no other visible traffic.

About 15 seconds ahead of time, I indicated right, slowed down using the brakes rather than engine braking so that the car following would see the brake lights.

I checked over my right shoulder which was clear. I then moved to my side of the centre line, continuing to indicate and slow over the last 20m or so.

As I drew level with our gate, I did a final shoulder check over my right shoulder.

Only to find myself staring at the side of the Volvo that had been following me!! Yes. The absolute (insert angry and rude epithet of choice here) had decided to over take a motorcycle as it was turning right.

There is a reason we call those shoulder checks ‘Lifesavers’ in the UK!

I obviously aborted the turn (!) and swerved left then ended up missing the drive and having to turn round.

The level of carelessness exhibited by that driver is incomprehensible.

I get that. Years ago I was moving ahead on a green light, a car was wanting to turn right, he has to wait. Being on a bike, you MUST assume the worst, so I looked at him, he saw me, yet turned in front so I braked with front and rear brakes, more on the rear for stability, locked them up, and continued on

Agreed. I just assume they’re all out to get me. It’s the only approach that works!

The basic rule of defensive driving is to always assume that whatever can go wrong, will, and to be prepared for that. Never assume the driver of that other vehicle isn't a seven year-old truant.

And if they aren't idiots, they're social Darwinists.

"I regret to say that we of the F.B.I. are powerless to act in cases of oral-genital intimacy, unless it has in some way obstructed interstate commerce." — J. Edgar Hoover

"Create a society that values material things above all else. Strip it of industry. Raise taxes for the poor and reduce them for the rich and for corporations. Prop up failed financial institutions with public money. Ask for more tax, while vastly reducing public services. Put adverts everywhere, regardless of people's ability to afford the things they advertise. Allow the cost of food and housing to eclipse people's ability to pay for them. Light blue touch paper." — Andrew Maxwell

It is not just bike riders that have to watch out for this.

I had that happen to me when turning right into my gate when driving a car. The idiot in the car behind me passed between me and the gateway I was about to turn into. Just as well I looked in my side mirror before starting to turn.

Glad you were ok.

I've had the same thing happen to me, when in a car. I indicated right, slowed down, and had someone decide that this was a perfect time to overtake. I'd actually started the turn and got quite a fright when this guy blasted his horn because he was, of course, absolutely not where I expected anyone to be.

Last night I was on a two lane road. The car in the left lane was doing about 85, so I went into the right lane and went 100. I like to leave a bit of space before I pull back into the other lane so I didn't immediately switch back to left, but just as I was about to put my indicator on the other guy sped up to maybe 120-130, then as soon as he was one car-length ahead of me proceeded to slow down again. Thinking back on it, given that it was at about 23:30 on a Saturday, I wonder whether he'd been drinking.

Summer in Wellington. Heating on. Looked at my suburbs weather, it says 13 degrees but feels like 5 degrees with the wind chill. All week not much better.

Are there any Russian ships nearby? That would be one possible explanation. 😁😉

Watercare's "digital assistant"...

Our digital agent is available from 6.30am to 10.30pm, Monday to Friday, and 7am to 5pm, Saturday and Sunday.

Surely one benefit of digital agents is that they can log faults 24/7?

Ah, the post-holiday blues...may they pass quickly.

I wanted to watch a cheesy 80s action flick last week, so fired up Tubi and watched The Exterminator.

A few days ago I get an email

So I go to Tubi to watch it last night and it doesn't come up in the search so I click on the email link and 🤷‍♂️

Ended up watching it US Tubi.

Another good one with marketplace last night.  Someone asked if they could pick something up in an hour so I said that's fine and gave the address. 2 hours later they hadn't turned up.

"Are you still coming tonight?

"Sorry I just saw your message, I couldn't make it tonight."

Sigh. I usually don't give out the address until people confirm they are actually on the way but I thought coming in an hour pretty much meant he was on the way.
