kingdragonfly:

There's no "best before" on label.

I was surprised to hear that because I thought all manufactured food products in NZ have to have ‘best before’ or ‘use by’ date.

So I looked it up and found that peanut butter can legally be sold in NZ without a best-before date if its shelf life is longer than two years.

Same applies to other products with a shelf life greater than two years and there’s quite a long list - mainly dry products.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

I often find when looking around at the supermarket or costco that there are things with basically illegible best before dates on them. black print on transparent food packaging. poorly embossed little letters etc. There is a good chance that its there but just cant be found.

IMO there needs to be a legibility requirement on use by and best before dates on things where if someone cant find it within a few seconds of picking it up, thats a fail.

Sometimes the label will say something like "for best before see neck of bottle" and I'll spend a whole minute squinting for it before finding that it's actually printed on the bottom.

The best before date empty box is a classic - best before date could be anywhere else.

Supermarket bakery items are shocking for lack of date information. Some, mostly Woolworths, only have a best before date. Some have a packed on date. Very few have a baked on date.

Products dates should be easy to read and find on packaging. They should also be an actual date, not some secret date code that only the product manufacturer can decifer.

Ideally, also on things like usage instructions and ingredients.

The annoying habit of a lot of electronics to have a dark grey, metallic printing of specifications on black plastic on the back of electronics needs to stop. Having to carefully align the back of a laptop with a light hoping to find out a serial number or something does my head in.

MikeB4:

Peanut butter if unopened has a shelf life of circa 24-30 months. If kept in a cupboard and properly closed it will last about 12 months. My wife turns a jar of peanut butter regularly to keep the oil from settling to the bottom.

But the peanut oil floats on top, not at the bottom. 😉 I leave it on top and stir it when I need it. The oil on the surface prevents bacteria from easily getting in when the jar is opened.

Sorry about that I got it back to front. I meant to say 'to stop the butter from settling to the bottom' If not turned on a regular basis by the time one is over halfway through you end up eating damp peanut plaster.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

IMO that is less of a problem because you generally are better placed to inspect them.

Another thing I would insist on is that regulatory compliance crap for sale should be removable without leaving dags or damaging the item. I had a hell of a time getting the tags off all my ikea pillows without splitting the stitching holding them together.

Yep, the half metre of tags (actually measured after I managed to extract the multiple sheets) that some clothing seems to insist on having overlocked into the side seams.  Looking at you ASICS running tops.

Sure, if you absolutely have to have all your life story in 14 different languages, attach it with sacrificial single stitching so it can be removed easily.

kingdragonfly: Fix & Fogg "smooth peanut butter" peanut butter.

It say "Made in New Zealand" but then distributor mentions from Malaysia

I bought two jars from Pak N' Save.

Both entire jars of peanut butter have the viscosity of honey. I stirred it with a knife, and it just slowly drips off the knife.

Not a fan of smooth so no comment on viscosity. All jars in our local New World have best before ~May 2027, black dot matrix on dark blue background. Hard to see but there. No mention of Malaysia on label. Fix & Foggs website says they have a distributor in Malaysia not that they get anything from there.

I wonder if that was parallel imported or formulated for a different market. Anyway...

I have Windows 11 with the en_GB language pack. I accidentally installed the en_US version of Firefox. When I noticed that the spellchecker was flagging words like "colour", I uninstalled it and installed the en_GB version. That fixed it.

Fast-forward to this week and Firefox's spellchecker has randomly decided to switch to en_US.
