And yet you're back with an obviously related query a short time later.

Actually I think Contact is trying a sneaky tactic to get around the issue. But you are not answering my question. I just want to know if they can force this on me or if I have any legal recourse.

Probably best asked in your original thread.

Rikkitic: Do I have any rights here?

Presumably you have the right to refuse access to your property like anyone else.

If I refuse the upgrade can they refuse service?

I totally don't know. I expect so. More so if there are other providers willing to serve your property. Probably not without some reasonable warning.

Rikkitic: I am old and stubborn. I like some things the way they have always been done.

I'm in my mid 30's and still like things done the old way. Apart from this site, I have no other social media and still get my bills my post and yet some people who know me, tell me I should be in my 80's.

I have concerns about my old and crumbling power board. Things work fine at the moment. If the meter installer stuffs something up I have to pay for the new board. No thanks.

Sounds like an electrically unsafe installation in that case, in which case you should bring it up to an acceptable standard for them to be able to safely supply you with power..

I dont know why they cant just get a pole top smart meter that they can install on people that refuse to allow current metering technology to be installed and just disregard the one attached to the house.

It's not unsafe as long as no-one messes with it. I don't trust the process, @richms. This is a country where people get electrocuted because electricians wire things backwards and safety inspectors don't notice. It is a place where power pylons fall over because electricians remove all the bolts supporting them. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

If they did put smart meters on poles the poles would probably topple.

New Zealand. In the past, coastal shipping in New Zealand had a thriving fleet of 34 New Zealand-flagged container ships serving various ports.

However, deregulation in the late 1980s led to an influx of large international container ships that undercut local operators. Currently, only a few New Zealand-flagged container ships remain, such as the MV Moana Chief and MV Takutai Chief operated by Pacifica Shipping.

The container ship Dali killed 6 people when it hit and destroyed a bridge in Baltimore.

Baltimore leaders blame ship owner, manager.

The ship's lawyers and their owners, managers:
  • it's not our fault

  • if it is our fault, we didn't know. (blame the workers)

  • if it is our fault, it's really the Baltimore's city fault because it's their bridge

  • either way, our damages should be limited to the ship and its contents. Nothing for the widows, nothing for the city

So one pylon falling over due to a brain fart by a maintenence crew constitutes an unsafe country.
How many cases of the other thing happened? I'm gonna guess also a very small number with a vanishingly small chance vs total number of electrical jobs completed.
I'm sorry, but your stand of "i refuse to change" in this instance just paints you as the problem.
You've outlined a possible problem with your infrastructure and your choice is to put your head in the sand instead of fixing said problem.
I got my smart meter installed in an outside cabinet instead of the indoor asbestos board.
15 years later I finally got the indoor board also replaced with current spec recessed panel and breakers.
Yep, it costs money to rectify but will make it safer and more convenient for everyone in the future.

Fun discussion but I'm stopping here. I can see where this is headed. I just had a question and I guess it has been answered as much as it is going to be.

It was known that the bridge supports were vulnerable and should have had protection to deflect any collisions. The Chinese could have sold them a couple of man made islands to stick in the way.

Rikkitic:

I have always resisted this for what I feel are valid reasons and I strongly suspect they are trying to force this on me because they want to save money on the meter readers.

What are your valid reasons?

They will likely just say your meter needs calibration and or needs replacing, which will mean it needs to be changed.

If they damage anything when installing it, then they should be the ones fixing it.

Rikkitic:If I had my way companies would be slapped with huge fines every time they treated their customers with arrogance and disrespect.

How are they treating you with arrogance and disrespect? its their service they are providing you, you are welcome to change companies whenever you like. Sooner or later you will need to put in a smart meter.

And to be honest you will probably end up being able to save on power with a smart meter by being able to access time of use rates.

My two cents on smart meters.

Pros: I lived in an apartment in Wellington, where the power meters were in secure parking. I NEVER got a meter reading ever. I was told the previous tenant hadn't got one sometime before they left. All bills were best-guesses. After I left, I got a $3,000 bill (they finally took a meter reading). I refused to pay, and they let it go. A smart meter would have meant no problems (I hope) to get readings.

Cons: Smart meters have been hacked. These device are often made cheap, in China, and the security is horrible. A Defcon meeting had one that used HTTP (unencrypted) and a plain text password. There was a different meter that used the same default short well-known password on all customer's devices. Lastly Defcon gave several demos of how nefarious parties (burglars, governments) could determine when you were likely at home, or away, by figuring out your normal usage patterns.

Neutral: It may allowing more variable rates. This is a dual-edge sword because it could be cheaper, or it could be unexpectedly much more expensive.

The meter on the pole idea is a good one. Better cell reception up there!

Maintenance would be a pain so they'd never install there and some paragraph of installation regs prevent it anyway imo.
