At one point we allowed people to set their own priorities on IT tickets. I'd say that around 95% came in as "Urgent". Very few actually were.

As a service management evangelist I'm still a big fan of applying ITIL principles, meaning that the Service Desk applies the priority to incidents based on urgency and impact.

Watching yourself get priced out of life insurance as you get older and more likely to actually need it.

I don't have any involvement in the insurance business, and the following is just opinion, not advice

Life insurance works like a casino with spreadsheets. The company prices your mortality risk, collects premiums up front, invests the cash flow, and pays only a fraction back in claims. Shareholders get paid first. Your payout depends on timing.

If you're interested on how the other side lives, America, in their shark infested waters there's a video below.

NJ Life and Health appears to be a licensed insurance brokerage based in Toms River, New Jersey. There's no obvious complaints about the company.

Explains why US $9.95 policies often cover very low benefits in the most expensive health care in the world, no more than US $1,500. Very likely not be enough for full funeral costs.

Video explains waiting periods common in guaranteed acceptance life: “2‑year contestability/waiting period”

And it compares underwritten to guaranteed acceptance policies.

New Zealand

NZ has “no medical underwriting” or “guaranteed acceptance” life insurance products,

Otherwise New Zealand is surprisingly similar. Both New Zealand and the US have the same problems

Even though medical treatment and funerals are cheaper here, NZ premiums are typically higher relative to coverage. In the good news , coverage is more likely to match actual funeral costs.

Mostly the language and regulation names are different.

Interesting video. I can't say what I mentioned (and saw) is exactly unexpected but its still, you know, annoying watching things go up about 4 times the rate of inflation.

It sounded close, and none of the pipes are near the bedroom (no ensuite). It didn't sound like water hitting concrete.

Hopefully I won't hear it again!

It may have been a longhorn beetle. I found one (or something approximating it) in the bedroom today and although I can't find a good recording of what they sound like, it might be in the "close enough" department, especially when adding my sleep-addled brain to the mix.

You just have to charge more for it.

I am reminded of a friend who loved it when their customers stupid directors and similar would phone the IT help number (because they are above making a ticket) and they would describe their phone not getting email as urgent. The ticket taker would confirm "so this is a high priority issue?" and mister too big and important would say its your number 1 priority.

So they would then happily call one of the techs who was on call knowing they would make a decent charge out of the ticket. The tech had an easy thing like "you have turned your mobile data off" and they would get to bill a high priority after hours ticket.

It works until it doesn't. Big global company, a lot of janky not-so-integrated systems and middleware, the central service desk has decided that only tickets with revenue impact >$10m / day are to be classified as P1. Therefore any issues impacting the NZ subsidiary (average revenue $1m / day) are never going to be P1!

That means they're not doing it right.  If we start going down an ITIL purist track, the criteria (impact and urgency framework/matrix) are defined by management (IT and business leadership),  it's then the role of the service desk to implement/apply these criteria.

Modern versions of Visual Studio (e.g. 2022, but to a greater extent 2026) and their propensity for making code "suggestions" that make it a few characters shorter while also making it far less readable. I don't understand why Microsoft decided that "code golf" is something that people wanted by default, and from comments I've seen on MS blog posts I'm certainly not the only person who feels that way.

I’m finding YouTube infuriating lately. Am bombarded with rubbish AI generated content among the few politics subs I enjoy. All the 'secrets' no one will tell you and 'watch this before it’s deleted,' crap is becoming very irritating and there’s no way I can fathom to stop the content turning up. There’s also constant fake Piers Morgan videos after I watched one legit interview. It’s getting to the point that you tube has become unwatchable. Wish there was a way to erase all the suggestions and start over instead of having to scroll through the trash.

I am much happier and still manage to go about my life without visiting YouTube ever. I find there are a lot of good books in the library.

Not really viable. As soon as you login again the suggestions will come back. Data is stored on the server side, not only on the client side.

I don't get much rubbish, but the ads are getting more and more annoying. This morning I had two unskippable ads, followed by 1-2 seconds of video, then another pair of unskippable ads, one of which was the same as one of the ads I'd just seen.

I have completely stopped using YouTube. It just isn't worth it. This is the only response left to users. If enough people just go away, they will get the message.
