My heat pump failing after three years and the supplier demanding $1650 - about half its original price - to fix it. Highway robbery. Yes, ants got onto the PCB and fried it, but that's still a huge amount of money for some electronics.

Surely it’s not unreasonable to expect the electronics in outdoor equipment to be ant-proof?

Every piece of electrical goods -- heat pumps included -- will have insect damage excluded from warranty claims.  It's even excluded by insurance.  You really must keep up maintenance of such appliances, keeping the spaces around it clean and monitored.

Having this issue in Windows 11, following the advice, and still having the issue.

"I regret to say that we of the F.B.I. are powerless to act in cases of oral-genital intimacy, unless it has in some way obstructed interstate commerce." — J. Edgar Hoover

"Create a society that values material things above all else. Strip it of industry. Raise taxes for the poor and reduce them for the rich and for corporations. Prop up failed financial institutions with public money. Ask for more tax, while vastly reducing public services. Put adverts everywhere, regardless of people's ability to afford the things they advertise. Allow the cost of food and housing to eclipse people's ability to pay for them. Light blue touch paper." — Andrew Maxwell

Re: the heat pump, someone posted on Reddit last year that they succeeded with a CGA claim for potential insect damage, and that was after 6.5 years. The relevant bits:

I made the claim under the cga that it was not reasonable to get only that long from a reputable heatpump, and won. During the hearing the installer tried to claim it might have been insect damage, but since they refused to diagnose it they hadn't had the chance to inspect the board and therefore I should be liable. One of those small companies that has no idea on the cga and thinks they are free to make their own rules

I any case, I made the argument that the cause of the circuit board failure was not due to any negligence in my part, and if the circuit board is vulnerable to insect damage it's clearly not fit for purpose. It's entirely foreseeable that insects would be attracted to a warm dark space in an outdoor unit, and simple protection methods like potting or properly enclosing live components are available. It's certainly worth going down this path, too many installers get away with this and it's not good enough

"Might be insect damage".  The failure in that case was to not even offer any remediation.

Do you have any adblockers on your network?  What happens if you hotspot the machine through a cell phone, ensure it has connectivity from the lock screen, and restart it?  Is it a new install?

In recent months I have twice reported the same vehicle in our street via Auckland Transport's 'report an abandoned vehicle' online page. I supplied all the required info and included some photos - eg. rego expired 18 months ago, no WOF, cracked windscreen.

They ask if you want to receive a confirmation email. I said yes, gave my email address then submitted. A confirmation with a case number comes up on the screen - but no email. And you never hear from them again - the thing disappears into a black hole.

The cost of spares is an absolute rort.

Considering there will be nothing high tech going on with this controller as well.

Going to a Radiologist (or whatever they are called) and having my arms scanned - being told everything that's going on and what's wrong with the muscles, tendons, ligaments etc, but not really understanding much of it.

Medical Professional: Blah, Blah, Blah, sore, Blah Blah Blah, torn right there, Blah Blah Blah, Lateral Epicondylitis.

Me: So, it's Tennis Elbow, then?

Medical Professional: Yep. That's what I said.

Edit: Just found this graphic, which tells me so much more than a thousand words...

Not being able to contact Metaname today.

My domain didn't auto renew. I can't log in to the Metaname account, because the OTP I need to log in, is stored in a self hosted Vault warden instance, accessed through my domain.

Try again tomorrow I guess.

Ouch. Did you not get a reminder about a month before to top up your account?

The hosts file suggestion above is a good idea.

In such a situation, ask for print outs of some information.  They probably should have provided that without needing to be asked.

My quacks will get the report and will let me know what's what, I guess - I'm seeing them on Monday

@Handsomedan

Lateral Epicondylitis sounds so much more important and serious than Tennis Elbow which invokes images of someone sleek wearing immaculate whites with a deep V cable jumper draped over the shoulder looking like they belong on a tennis court in Wimbledon and who just mildly twisted an arm.

That picture makes a big difference to what was imagined. Doesn’t look like something that will be fast to heal either so patiently rest it and hopefully it will improve soon.

Yeah, it's quite the misnomer!
It's one of the more painful injuries I've had to endure and I have had a fair amount in my 50-odd years on this earth!!

The unfortunate thing is that it could take up to a year to heal, even with intensive physiotherapy and exercise so it's about doing things slightly differently & managing the pain while I go about my normal life.

Edit: Now I want to get a white cable knit jumper to drape over my shoulders! 😄
