I woke up this morning (Monday) convinced it was Saturday.

Annoying.

I experienced this for a while when I was traveling extensively for work. I would wake up early in the morning in a hotel and, for a good while, genuinely not know whether I was in France, Germany, Canada, or Jakarta. Afterward, I discussed and implemented a few work-related changes with my boss. It worked.

Firewalls do NOT stop dragons. Really not. But your smart devices are spying on you!
I avoid Big Tech amap. They try hard to dictate technology and „culture“ across borders.
In effect we have everything to hide from someone, and no idea who „someone“ is.

Lay your clothes out the night before. Wake up, clean your teeth, have breakfast. What does it matter where you think you are? You will find out soon enough.

It matters - in some places they clean their teeth after breakfast.

For 15 years I have used TripIt simply to keep track of our travel itineraries. It's been brilliant and I’m not sure what I would do without it.

However recently I felt it had lost some of its former shine. So after hunting on the ‘net, yesterday I downloaded and tried Kayak - but to use only the itinerary record-keeping part of the app. All you need to do to use this, is forward to them (same with TripIt) each email you receive confirming bookings for flights/hotels/rental cars/trains/tours etc - and it creates the itinerary.

When setting up Kayak I specifically denied it access to my email inbox - because I want to maintain control over what gets into our itinerary records. However it ignored that, saw an email discussion I was having with a tour operator about a possible hotel booking - and put it into our itinerary as a booking when no booking had been made. Very annoying and dangerous.

When I sent it a confirmation of a tour booking in Europe, it completely failed to recognise it. TripIt had no trouble doing this.

From the outset I started getting heaps of emails saying what wonderful things Kayak could do for me. And then, when I opened Apple TV last night, there was the Kayak app for ATV sitting there - download unsolicited and unauthorized.

All this over-reaching invasiveness and pervasiveness reminds me of why I disliked FaceBook and stopped using it 15 years ago. Far too smart and presumptuous. God knows what it would be like if I was also using its other services like flights and rental car bookings. I want nothing to do with Kayak and have deleted it all.

So TripIt isn’t so bad after all - it does only one thing but does it extremely well.

The same way trying to download an app from the net takes you through further pages where 90+% of the adverts have big download buttons on them - the real one is often just a hyperlink.

Nobody cares.

Nobody cares.

I had to clean up a customers tablet with 5(!) nagware PDF viewers they installed from ads in games. Tell them not to tap on install but they think it's legit and go ahead anyway 🤦‍♂️

I checked it out and it has pretty fancy graphics to showcase the library.

The useful bit however (the catalogue) is on an entirely different website and no readily visible link to it from their $600k bit.
