I love Wednesdays because that's the day I meet up with a small group of mates, all of 50+ years standing, for a few pre-dinner beers at a local tavern.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

Binging a recent discovery with well over 100 episodes. Today the "selected episode" block in the shows-9-episodes-at-a-time slider moved from the centre to one block to the right. That means there are only three episodes left, and then I'm going to have a wait a week between them!

Trying to get my elderly parents set up on TVNZ+'s new app for the FIFA World Cup.

They've bought the pass and then they've discovered that their ageing Sony smart TV doesn't like the new TVNZ app requirements, so it doesn't work.

Then I decided to try and help them set up mum's iPad with it, so she could cast it to the TV for dad. She's forgotten her gmail password and needs the code sent there to activate the new app login.

I'm in AKL and they're in Dunedin, so it's all being done on Facetime, during which I am mostly looking at the floor, dad's finger or mum's ear.

Quite frustrating being tech support from a distance.

@Handsomedan you can request permission to share screen on the iPad and then to control it. Might be easier that way.

We lost a bag in aussie a few months ago which contained a book worth $100, the bag would have been worth around $100, car keys which cost several hundred to replace, not to mention the locksmith fee to open the car at the airport, additional day of parking time at the airport .....

But we had SCTI so sweet, right? No. After a bunch of emails for them asking details of the book and the bag, two months time pass for them to tell us they don't provide cover for items you can't provide proof of purchase for. So nothing for the book and the bag.

They also say no cover for car keys.

So next time you consider travelling and insuring with SCTI, if you've not got receipts for your items then don't bother taking those items into consideration.

I am not opposed to the sensible use of AI, but the rising failure rate at my son’s university speaks volumes.

Professors are countering this with highly dynamic exam questions for everyone and strict measures to prevent smartphone-based cheating during tests. Anyone relying solely on AI in that scenario is completely out of luck.

Just how stupid do you have to be to think that AI guarantees you a degree? The number of cases involving plagiarized coursework and forged diplomas is also steadily rising, forcing HR departments to contact university administrations to verify the authenticity of candidates' grades and credentials before hiring them.

I avoid Big Tech amap. They try hard to dictate technology and „culture“ across borders.

If someone told me acidemia pass rates are falling, I'd immediately blame time and brains being wasted away on social media

AI isn't to blame for this; it’s the people who are too immature to handle it. And you simply can't unleash those kinds of people on humanity. Someone like that clearly can’t shoulder any real responsibility toward their fellow human beings (yeah, I know—as if that even matters these days).

At some point during my long career, HR asked me to present the original versions of my official diplomas (bearing the institution's coat of arms), sealed certificates, and government-issued licenses in person—meaning not even certified copies would suffice. I was surprised at the time, but it turned out that some candidates had been quietly escorted off the premises by security within 30 minutes, leaving them to look forward to a criminal record for document forgery—along with a new, much more difficult job search.
