Yeah, I understand it. I guess the main bulletin is used to talk about the biggest things happening in NZ.  I too am a big sports fan, and I would be happy for sport to be entirely contained, however, there are some things, like if we were to win a tournament entirely (RWC or whatnot) where there could be an argument it meets the greater public interest.

There are lots of big news things I couldn't care less about, but I still have to listen to them to get to the news I actually care about. Sometimes I'd like more coverage of one thing and another.

I mainly watch Australian news on ABC. At least it is in our region and some things that happen there also matter here. ABC is an excellent source. Unlike our own news, which is utterly pathetic and made even worse by all the sports crap that shouldn't be in the main news at all. I watch TVNZ only for local news specific to New Zealand. It is more habit than anything. If I actually want to know about something, I go to sources like the Spinoff and others. I don't have a problem with your point that big sports happenings are worthy of notice on the main news, but it should just be a headline with reference to the main sports news. It shouldn't be a 10-minute feature.

On another note, I get a little weary of ageist comments about the preferences of old people and the products assumed to appeal to them. This is directed at other posters, not you. I just didn't want to have to make a separate post about it.

The way that ad breaks have crept into the greatest sporting tournament of all, through strategic "hydration breaks", along with other well-placed interruptions.
Thanks, USA! USA! USA! for inflicting your particular brand of consumerism on actual civilised world.

Yeah these are getting frustrating. The Americans have essentially turned the game into quarters like. I'm surprised they haven't also tried to add time outs so we can have ads every few minutes and a 90 minute game takes all day with more ads while the players stand around on the sideline than game like the American sports

I have never advised customers to contact me via Teams. I have explicitly advised customers not to put stuff in Teams.

I have received a Teams message starting with "I have a request and I know I should put a ticket in, but it's URGENT." This message was sent on Wednesday and went unseen by me because I don't spend all day in Teams. If she had put a ticket in then the issue would have been resolved last week.

Putting important or urgent things into instant messages is definitely something that annoys me. The young generation seem to think that everyone spends all day staring at their phones waiting for the next dopamine hit.

The way that sports news has crept into the regular news. Thanks TV1 for making even that brief half-hour irritating as hell for those of us who don't care about sports. At all.

I agree with this and I'm a rabid sportsball fan.
To have sports in the main bulletin is ridiculous, when there's a section dedicated to it, that people who have no interest in sports can avoid, it should be compartmentalised. Like the weather, I suppose.

The soccer football is getting promoted by TVNZ1 to be both "general news" as well as "sports' simply because TVNZ has the broadcast rights in NZ.

It's just advertising their exclusive product very thinly disguised as news.
Don't be deceived that this product placement would be occurring if Sky or TV3 had the rights: in that case all coverage of the FIFA World Cup would be relegated to the Sports section, and aired behind Rugby & Loyg news at that.

For several years now, I’ve watched virtually no regular TV; I feel my time is far too valuable to waste on today’s mindless drivel, and I have no need to be entertained by idiotic soap operas.

Nevertheless, I stay well-informed via reputable radio streams. IF something truly important were to happen, I could pull up the live stream from public broadcasters on my screen at any time to get reliable, ad-free information (since they are already funded by mandatory fees).

For me, the TV screen serves primarily as a display for films worth watching; the rest don't even make it onto my NAS. 😎

I also couldn't care less that nowadays you can peer up the nostril of some self-proclaimed celebrity halfway across the globe using the latest micro-camera—and are supposedly expected to find that interesting. You can actually still find truly high-quality documentaries here—both live and via streaming—that offer genuine journalistic excellence and a chance to gain real knowledge, all for free and without ads (since they are funded by mandatory fees).

The general public is less interested in that sort of thing... because it requires NI (natural intelligence) rather than AI... 😁

edit:

The most important lesson I have learned and adopted in life is that, during one’s (happy) childhood, one could look to the (adult) people around one and trust in what was important for one’s own life. Over time, this has changed drastically and reciprocally; anyone who continues to do this—following the crowd without discipline—makes a massive mistake that they do not even notice (or are unable to notice).

Today, one really MUST question almost everything to find the right path in life. That is—and was—my primary task as a father, and fortunately, it has worked out well. It is incredibly fun to discuss things on an equal footing with one’s adult child and—despite all individual and generational differences—to arrive at a shared, solid point of view.

  • In effect we have everything to hide from someone, and no idea who „someone“ is.

Im the opposite. Putting things in IMs is the best way I find. Phonecalls will go ignored and emails are a sitting at the desk activity.

Serial ticket reopeners.

Me: closes ticket with comment about what I did.
Customer: reopens ticket with "Thank you".
Me: copy/pastes comment and recloses ticket.
Customer: reopens ticket with "Thank you!"
Me: puts a space in the comment box and recloses ticket.
Customer: reopens ticket with "Thank you [Behodar] :)"
Me: screams.

Companies that clearly astroturf on social media really peeve me off. I work in a specific industry and utilise a product that isn't that great. But when you Google it you can see so many basically identical posts with the same weird phrasing, praising it. But with different user names. It's so obviously fake but unless you see more than one of the comments you'd have no idea. Makes me never want to use that company's products ever again if I have the choice.

I monitor emails constantly throughout the day because I can quickly and easily flag items for follow up, or file them into a folder. Instant messages are something that I only check once a day when I have time to spare because there is no workflow functionality.
