kingdragonfly: Cooking oil in China was contaminated with fuel oil, by re-using fuel containers. Similarly there was a scandal last week where at least one septic tank pumping truck, in poor condition. was used to transport drinking water.

This is the kind of crap that happens with no regulation. But don't say it to Seymour. He won't like it.

Good news for New Zealand

The total value of cooking oil goods exported from New Zealand to China in 2023 was somewhere between NZD $31 to 100 billion. China received approximately 27% of New Zealand’s exports of cooking oil.

And the number of order-of-magnitude errors in that sentence is somewhere between 2.9999 and 3.0001.

Yep - I’m sure it was - somewhere between NZ$31.00 and NZ$100b.

Two things, firstly that would make exports in a minor industry that most people barely know about between one and three times bigger than our entire dairy industry and a significant fraction of our GDP, and secondly the data from a quick Google, which admittedly only went to 2019, showed vegetable oil exports at 5-10M a year.

So technically that would fall in the realm of between thirty one dollars and one hundred billion dollars quite nicely 🤣

I went by what Copiliot told me. I guess it's true that AI lies if it doesn't know the number.

Ah, but that sort of stuff has happened here with our regulation. A bit of googling using oil well drilling mud and milk as search items should produce something.  👍

I should mention both incidents in China did look intentional and long-term to save money, similar China's previous melamine adulteration of milk.

It appears Fonterra's milk was a one-off accident. Moreover the milk was intercepted before the six tankers reached the processing plants.

Currently, it often lies even if it does know the number. Not worth using.

This cartoon (from 2019 & still too relevant) comes to mind...

"I regret to say that we of the F.B.I. are powerless to act in cases of oral-genital intimacy, unless it has in some way obstructed interstate commerce." — J. Edgar Hoover

"Create a society that values material things above all else. Strip it of industry. Raise taxes for the poor and reduce them for the rich and for corporations. Prop up failed financial institutions with public money. Ask for more tax, while vastly reducing public services. Put adverts everywhere, regardless of people's ability to afford the things they advertise. Allow the cost of food and housing to eclipse people's ability to pay for them. Light blue touch paper." — Andrew Maxwell

kingdragonfly: Good news for New Zealand

New Zealand imports numerous food items from China. New Zealand also imports numerous food items from other countries that may or may not use China sourced vegetable oil. In practice China cooking oil exports are a tiny percentage of the world market and China is probably a net importer of cooking oils.

It's not a country I consider safe to provide food for my family.

I look at every item I buy at the supermarkets. If there's a non-Chinese-origin alternative, I will get it.

Many of those "Indian" starters from the frozen section are made in China. Garlic comes in two flavours: China or New Zealand. and so on.

This thing about the oil and water being transported in a septic tank truck are just examples.

Could it happen in New Zealand or Australia? Sure, but I trust the regulations around food safety are more strict.
