Handsomedan:

Annoyed at the way in which employers treat applicants.

Have applied for 3 jobs in the last few months.

Two internal and one external.

All three, I'd be considered (on paper and in the real world) a bit of a shoe-in. Very much qualified, experienced and in the appropriate industry - also more than senior enough.

Have not heard anything from any of them. Not a thing since the acknowledgement of the initial application.

At the seniority of the positions, I'd think there'd be at least an automated response saying thanks but no thanks.

Quite annoying.

It's shocking out there at the moment. I was made redundant last October, and have applied for a stack of jobs since- most of which, like you, on paper I should be guaranteed shortlist. I have been interviewed twice. Most are a generic "thanks but no thanks" email a few months later, but yes, some don't even bother with that.

I have resorted to using AI in my applications. I should have been doing it from the start. It's from this I have had the 2 interviews in the last month or so.

It's called Gear Acquisition Syndrome (GAS)

I'm severely affected by a related disorder that affects fisherman, called Tackle Acquisition Syndrome (TAS).  It's widely documented, and reasonably common. Sadly, there is no cure.

I've also recently started displaying symptoms of knot-nerd-itis.  Only last week I struck up conversation with a total stranger about the pros and cons of the Palomar knot vs the FG knot.

I've not heard of either knot but I'm guessing the FG knot stands for F#####g Good knot otherwise known as the Granny knot. 🤣

The Granny knot is a reef knot gone wrong so I don't think that it could ever be called a good knot.

Subway

  • Value for money. It can now cost the best part of $20 for a mid-range “footlong” sub (chicken strips, classic chicken, 3 pepper chicken, etc.) at some stores. The sliced ham is so thin it is getting close to being transparent.
  • Quality and quantity. The lettuce seems to frequently be just the white stalks, never the nice green leaves shown in the advertising. The “sandwich artists” have perfected the art of “fluffing” the salads to make it look like they’re applying a reasonable amount. It can be almost a combative experience asking for more salad.
  • Freshness. I’m sick of going into a store before 9AM only to find that they have no fresh bread. If you look at the salads in the servery you’ll frequently see that many of the vegetables have started to freeze because the temperature has been set too low.  When your longstanding branding contains the words “eat fresh”, then it is only reasonable to expect a reasonable degree of freshness.
  • No turkey options. The turkey breast was fantastic, much better than the processed turkey before and afterwards. Now all turkey is gone.
  • Loyalty scheme. Subway went from one of the best loyalty schemes; the stamps where you earnt rewards at 12.5% of purchases, then to the digital scheme were rewards fell to around 3% of purchases. At least one third of the time the digital system didn’t even work. This was despite the scanning of the QR code appearing to work (green light, beep), and the worker acknowledging the apparently successful process. Now there is no loyalty scheme.
  • Lack of basic mathematic skills. I frequently order a footlong to share. The other person has a smaller appetite so only requires one third of a sub. You wouldn’t believe just how few “sandwich artists” can understand one third, two thirds. Most try to cut the sub into three even pieces, thirds. Even after explaining what I want, most of them still try their hardest to stuff it up. At one-point Subway even had an official cutting template as part of the standard shop fit out. Place the template over the sub and it showed where to cut for different portion configurations.

Yet, even with all these issues, Subway is somehow still a better option than many other places like, McDonalds, KFC, and Burger King.

My additional bugbear with Subway (I agree with all of your points above, BTW) is that I don't like the idea of them using a dirty knife to cut my sandwich in half - I didn't want other people's ingredient lists on my sub - please don't add them from an hour ago via your dirty knife.
The looks I get when I say, please don't cut it, or could you please clean the knife before you cut it?
You'd think I was asking them to go hoe and get changed before serving me.

At the prices they now charge it's simply not worth going there anymore.

The novelty wore off for me years back.

With how bad all the fastfood places are now I just go to an indian or thai resturant and spend a little more and get something a lot better. Plus they usually serve beer.

Click advertising that does not link to the product/price advertised. No, of course I'm not going to navigate an entire site to find the thing you're trying to sell me..

SD cards no longer detecting a partition, and having to wait for the recovery software to do its work.

Over the last few months our Rural Delivery driver and NZ Couriers have had some sort of falling out, so he will no longer deliver their packages on his route. NZ Couriers have put an ad-hoc service in place delivering once or twice a week if there are enough packages for the route. Sometimes the ad-hoc courier runs out of time so the package gets held to the next delivery a few days later. Packages are taking 7-11 days to be delivered which is a real pain when waiting for an urgent part.

Unless I've ordered from a supplier before it's hard to find out if NZ Couriers is their provider and ask them to use NZ Post, and even then they won't use NZ Post as NZ Couriers is their contracted courier and they're not set up to use NZ Post.

Surely if you are paying for the rural delivery surcharge then that should be the end of any problems between them.

@aaristotle ... I'd be tempted to send all three service providers a note saying that the situation is unacceptable (and plainly childishly stupid), so you've decided neither should make any money from you and henceforth purchase stuff elsewhere and 'click & collect' 😇

If it's anything like my neck of the woods, NZ Couriers/etc hand over to a crowd called Coural and then wash their hands of it (including tracking & signature required). That said, I think if a similar split happened and Coural actually used a competent driver (the guy that took over the RD route is far from) and were timely, it might reopen the door to using the likes of Pilldrop/etc again. Despite all the markings for perishable/medicines, the driver would leave it out in the sun not knowing if we were home, gosh knows what would've happened if the controlled stuff (not MC) went missing.

I haven't dived in to the terms and conditions, but I would guess that delivery timeframes are 'best effort', as the receiver I'm not even part of the 'contract' as that would be the sender, and the parcels are eventually being delivered.

I have complained to NZ Couriers and they have offered to hold the parcels for pickup but its an 80 minute round trip to pickup from the depot, and similar for click and collect. Many of the items I order are agricultural parts and consumables not available locally so have to be couriered.

I guess as Rural Delivery drivers are independent contractors they have the right to accept or decline to work with which ever courier companies they want, but in a rural area I can see how difficult it would be for an individual courier company to setup an alternate service with limited packages over very large rural areas.

I can't think of an easy solution if the RD courier doesn't want the delivery contract, which leaves NZ Courier recipients (not customers) in a difficult situation.

My understanding is Coural is a co-operative of the independent rural delivery drivers, and I assume handles the accounting relating to selling the rural delivery tickets/add-ons and allocating the revenue to the drivers.

I'm guessing here but would think the rural delivery driver buys a contract to deliver NZ Post to a specific rural area, and any additional contracts such as NZ Couriers, My food bag, other couriers etc would be negotiated individually by each RD driver.

Bought some framed artwork from The Warehouse with the intention of swapping out the artwork for some that I have at home already. Didn't realise that the back of the frame is fully glued shut. Didn't even think to check for that.

Only spent $12 for 2x 40x60cm, but still. Annoying.
