So I asked on my latest order if they would use NZ Post instead of NZ Couriers. No worries they said, we use Posthaste, not NZ Couriers.

Of course same parent company and depot, so won't be seeing that order for at least a week.

Turns out my tablet's SD card wasn't defective after all, after putting it through a bad sector check. It's just that my years-old SD card reader didn't support larger SDHC/SDXC cards, so I went out and bought a USB 3.0 one that does support them.

Wakrak: Bought some framed artwork from The Warehouse with the intention of swapping out the artwork for some that I have at home already. Didn't realise that the back of the frame is fully glued shut. Didn't even think to check for that. Only spent $12 for 2x 40x60cm, but still. Annoying.

I gather it's some hideous construction with no possibility of safe disassembly. Warehouse is good with no fault returns usually.

Takes me back to my days of doing despatch. We had a list of customers that had specific courier requirements for many varied reasons. Definitely don’t be afraid to request a specific courier, it’s not unusual.

We have some that dont want any plastic used when packing their stuff which is always fun to see what used paper based packing we have available. Thankfully all the kmart orders to work keep a good supply of that on hand mostly.

Annoying call for help request of the day: complaining that they can’t save a pdf, while looking at a pdf they’ve opened from their downloads.

They were of course looking for the old save function that if they’d used, would have created a copy of the downloaded file in another location.

Recruiter reached out to me from LinkedIn.
I'd be an ideal candidate for a senior position that he urgently needed to put candidates forward for.

He'd clearly used Chat GPT to write his email as it used all the hallmarks of AI and buzzwords etc.

Email exchange and it looks like I'd be ideal - right experience, right seniority etc.

What's next, I ask?
Please send your CV.

10pm - I send the latest version of a brief CV to him, as requested. It's brief, but details my 30+ year work history with relevant achievements etc

This morning I receive a response asking when I had last had my CV professionally written, as it doesn't present as well as the hiring company would like to see...

I know exactly where this is going.

He then states that while he couldn't put me forward for this role, he'd love to help me with ensuring my resume meets the needs of future opportunities etc...in other words, I'd like to charge you to rewrite your CV, like I could do for you for nothing, if I was serious about putting you forward for the position discussed.

Nothing more than a shark swimming in a sea of desperate applicants.
Thankfully, I'm not that bothered as I have a job and am looking around simply from the position of boredom and interest, rather than desperation.

I'd hate to be currently unemployed. It must be so hard out there.

It's grim. I was made redundant early last year but due to a generous exit and a historic income insurance policy I really didn't try very hard until six months in. Boy oh boy. Nothing. The usual, apply, hear nothing, then a month later, generic email saying position closed. I'd have to look it up on my spreadsheet and see what the role actually was.

My previous job did not allow for any real networking, something I'd always been wary of. Reluctantly updated my Linkedin and received a short term contract through that. And now on a twelve month contract from a former colleague. So after many, many applications through seek etc, the old adage of not what you know, it's who you know seems apt. Which is a bit depressing. I was at the point where I didn't apply for anything advertised for more than three days. If you're applicant 202, or even 51, no one is looking that far.

In future I'm going to make more of an effort to stay in touch with people if only to be able to send them an email in future and say, oh hey, I'm looking. Murphy's Law, I was offered a second role three days after I signed for another position.

I got much more comfortable calling and email people high up in organisations and just giving my thirty second pitch. But I was given these details by colleagues and friends, anything to get past the HR or Agency gatekeepers.

Pay is another dilemma, but hey, anything is better than zero.

Yeah, I won't be replying to any follow up emails and haven't parted with anything other than a CV, which there'd be copies of out there anyway (and it looks much like my LinkedIn profile, so no new info being given away).

I'd say it feels more scammy than anything.

I had one that was Posthaste but it came with NZ Couriers. They came yesterday while my wife was home, she didn't hear the knock (must have been in the bathroom or down the other end of the house) and annoyingly they left a card instead of just leaving the small parcel in the letterbox. We have authority to leave set up with NZ Post but looks like NZ Couriers have their own version where they want to stick a barcode on the front of your house for them to scan.

This sort of crap is why I won’t supply a CV to a recruiter unless I get a position description and salary band. They disappear pretty quickly when you hold your ground.
