KiwiNZ: The Government has no place in owning or running broadcasting companies or any corporations. TVNZ should be sold.

I agree with you there is no place for Gov to own and operate  radio or TV networks. But in saying that there should be a Public Broadcasting Service (PBS)  of some sort an not Maori TV doing it ..

alienwithin: i keep seeing people mentioning that tvnz7 needs saving, especially on facebook.  It shows people talking about things they have no idea what they are talking about.  first tvnz7 is not closing down.  It does not need saving.  In Feb it was decided to  keep tvnz7 broadcasting on freeview, just that it will now include adverts.

Oh that's ok then.

I'm sure it will get a good following of advertisers.  We have 7 running more and more.  I like the adult male content.

Just wish that the science and tech programs on it were more up todate especially Nova Science and the like and less repeats. My TiVo is setup for first run only and it records only a small amount of these programs..

Possibly, but I think NZ needs a public broadcast channel, like many other countries have, something like the BBC. At least radio NZ still exists, just. Something that provides unbiased news etc. The current news channels are not good, and a lot of the time is used for advertising and self promotion.

I am not sure if it is correct, as I haven't seen any infromation that shows that it will continue as is, but with advertising. There was recent talk about radio NZ taking it over, which I think could be a good idea.

I would say the BBC conclusively proves there is a place for Governments to own and operate broadcasting networks.

The relevant questions in the New Zealand context are:

  • Is this where we want to spend our money? Or should it go on other things like hospitals and schools?
  • Who do we put in charge? Politicians? Independent Managers? Me? Related to this of course is the question of how we balance accountability with independence.
  • How do we decide what to show? The whole point is that it isn't mimicking commercial TV so "What people want to watch" doesn't do it. We also know that you can't do creativity by committee, so there is going to have to be a certain level of trust.

No two ways about it these are not easy questions to answer. The closest I can think of to an answer is something like: "Well, everybody thought The New Zealand Wars hosted by James Belich was good, lets do more like that".

Great as an example, useless as a definition.

But just because these questions are difficult does not mean we should not address them.

I've always thought having TVNZ 7 was a bit of a luxury we can't afford. Sure, it's "only" $12m a year but money does not grow on trees and the country is already massively in debt, we've got to cut out unnecessary costs.

My 2c.

The existence of the BBC doesn't prove anything, there is plenty of criticism of the BBC, eg:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Criticism_of_the_BBC

Every household has to pay £145.50 (~$280 NZD currently) tv license per year to fund the BBC plus funding of BBC from the government out of tax revenue etc.

Personally in the digital/internet age I think public funding of a broadcaster (which lets face it is mostly a form of entertainment) is less and less warranted.

New Zealand's local advertising market is too small and fragmented to support the production of local content solely on an advertising model. Productions in other countries often receive more viewers than there are people in New Zealand. If there is to be any local or public broadcasting content on television then it has to be paid for from some way other than advertising. Pay TV has no interest in local content with overseas content being so much cheaper and pay per view would be unlikely to cover costs.

New Zealand now has an entire generation of teenagers who prefer to try and speak without a New Zealand accent, have no understanding of its history and don't identify with it and wish to emigrate when they grow up. Television being saturated by American and Australian material has alot to do with it. New Zealanders will spend 0.4% of GDP on Sky and rising but are complaining that spending 0.004% of GDP on TVNZ7 or 0.1% of GDP on making TVNZ a public broadcaster again is not worthwhile. Meanwhile, New Zealand annually suffers billions of $ in tax evasion on "cash jobs" alone.

I guess the real question should be why would anybody want to save TVNZ7.

TVNZ always aimed 7's content at a niche audience who advertisers wouldn't care for. Funnily enough all the people I know who are mad over it being closed have been lifetime National voters. Some won't find any value from documentaries on history, science, art and anthropology but others do.

It will cost NZers less than $3 per year each to keep, at current funding. Yet many households are prepared to pay $1000's per year on sky tv.

These BBC planet docos are the type of thing that should be shown on tvnz7. Tvnz7 was never really promoted, so it was almost setup to fail. I don't even think it is listed in the Listener, which is the sort of market it could benefit the most.
Many people still don't know anything about it. It was more of a bribe to get people to move to freeview. Look at all the other channels that have been slowly closed...TVNZ Sports, TVNZ6, Stratos etc.
