To me, TVNZ7 has become what TV1 used to be.

I guess the answer is that I juat have to accept that broadcast TV is gong and I need to get with the times and start downloading good content like everyone else?

So, if you don't know how to save 7, but you can recommend some places I can download good content then please.

I suggest no one mentions anything illegal in this thread...

and the op should have a look at http://www.geekzone.co.nz/reven/8039 or apple TV being your best options.

Why don't you try watching SBS from the Optus D1 satellite Don?  All you need is a Sky dish, and a non Freeview-approved decoder.

It's unencrypted, thus not illegal to watch without a subscriber card, and shows lots of good BBC programmes -- mostly just 1 or 2 years old.  I watch more programmes from SBS than any other channel now.  Like you were saying, it has similarities with what TV1 used to be.

I also download a small number of other programmes via BBC iPlayer, which I find excellent.

You can't, they have already decided to close it. TVNZ is no longer a public broadcaster, and I think that it should now be sold due to this. The only public broadcast channel will be Maori tv once it is closed.

I would hardly call Maori TV public broadcasting..  But as has been said SBS  is the best choice though I see they seem to be going down the reality TV road now judging by recent promos....

It is taxpayer funded and non commercial ( not sure if it has advertising on it either), so I consider it a type of public broadcaster. Personally I would like to see tvnz7 merged in someway with maori tv, so we have an fully inclusive public broadcast channel. TVNZ7 is good, especially some of the local programs and hourly news, but a lot of the content is repeated over and over and over again. I now don't watch tv 1 as theydon't have much on that I want to watch. TV3 is far better these days, and I think they have overtaken tvnz on their quality of programs and news.

If I get a tax bill from the ATO, can I claim a tax credit from IRD?

Great idea, but kinda sad isn't it.

ZollyMonsta: http://www.stuff.co.nz/detect/national/6709307/MPs-question-top-heavy-pay-scale-at-TVNZ?sv=d interesting in itself.

ya I saw that this morning.  MFAT was last month, TVNZ next?

I suspect the wage gap is going to have to get much worse before there really is much in the way of change.

I suspect most people see high wages like lotto.  They're happy for them to exist because they have a perception that as long as they exist they'll have a chance of getting one....  sadly for many, that's just not true.

I do tend to think that perhaps the lobby should be to create a new state broadcaster without the commerical channels in it.

Though I'd also like to see the establishment of a channel with a national network of regional TV production houses so that there's TV created in every community every day.  I see CTV a bit like that and enjoy watching some of their content some of the time.  Though it's not on freeview I don't think is it?

i keep seeing people mentioning that tvnz7 needs saving, especially on facebook.  It shows people talking about things they have no idea what they are talking about.  first tvnz7 is not closing down.  It does not need saving.  In Feb it was decided to  keep tvnz7 broadcasting on freeview, just that it will now include adverts.

Where does it state that? It wasn't that long ago when it was going to be turned into a shopping channel, so would be interested in the details of what happens after the funding ends.

Sadly, like bad TV (or Sky repeating things ad infinitum, ad nauseam), the small scurrying creatures in the Beehive have absolutely ZERO qualms roundly applauding the Higher Salaries Commission as their collective nests are feathered more richly each year for imperceptable gain by the general public.

Regrettably, you don't see them turning the fiscally prudent eye upon themselves now, do you?

That article says 7 will not be turned into an advertising channel - but it does not say what it will be used for instead.

Have a look here: http://issues.co.nz/savetvnz7

It would only cost $16M to keep TVNZ 7.

You can compare this to any number of more expensive things this government has wasted money on.

The problem is Steven Joyce. He's calling the shots and he's backing pirates like Sky over our own public assets.

This is why I consider the National Party to be absolutely dreadful stewards of our shared public assets.

They run then down or shut them down or sell them off....all so their corporate buddies can make more cash through monopoly or taxpayer funding - with a profit built in that we didn't have to pay for before.....and we all get ripped off in the process.

If enough pressure is brought to bear we may be able to save TVNZ 7. It doesn't help that commercial media like the NZ Herald hate TVNZ 7 - refusing even to carry their program listings - and want it to go away.

The Government has no place in owning or running broadcasting companies or any corporations. TVNZ should be sold.
