Arthur's in Wellington, top of Cuba Street. More spacious than the website makes it appear, place is done up to look like it might be someones grandmothers living room. Super-friendly staff, meals "like mother used to make" at reasonable prices. The most enjoyable night out I've had for a while as it was just so relaxed, and the food was delicious. Most mains were around the $20 mark which for Wellington is bargainous.

Went to Floradita's a couple of weeks ago, possibly the most perfectly cooked steak I've ever had, but you do get the usual Cuba St "locals" gawping through the window at you.

Mexico in Britomart, Akl CBD.

First time I've been there, first proper mexican food as well. It's a nice little place, you can't book, just have to turn up and hope (unless you have really big numbers). We turned up at 6pm and got one of the last tables, it was way to early for us to eat but that was ok because they sell 1 litre margaritas which kept us going for a while.
The food was really cheap, portions are medium to small, made for sharing. You'd pay $8 to $14 for the majority of things on the menu.

Between the three of us, 4L of various alcoholic beverages, a bunch of small dishes over a period of 3.5 hours we ended up paying $50 each. I would consider that cheap for what we got.

8/10

Restaurant type: Mexican.

Well after hearing good things about Cafe Hannoi I decided to take the trip to the city and see what all the fuss was about.

Sadly apart from the well mannered waiters and generally nice decor, the overall experience was poor. Packed in like sardines, our table for two was practically on top of the two couples either side, hardly much of a romantic candle lit dinner.

The food was not great either... Pork Belly was stringy/fatty and under cooked, Snapper flavorless, Vegetables missing something.. Perhaps we simply ordered the wrong dishes.

While Cafe Hannoi is nowhere close to the league as Sales, The French Cafe or The Grove, I couldn't help but think about the rather nice Vietnamese I had a few weeks back at a food court which left me far more satisfied, and for much less.

5/10, and won't be returning unless dragged.

The Southern Cross in Wellington.

Two for one Stone Grill, Monday and Tuesday, means you get a good 400gm steak with sides for $15 each for two people, that's hard to beat.

OK, so you have to cook it yourself but I like that because I am plenty finicky about how I like my steak done.

Match that with friendly staff and very unpretentious decor and I think you have a winner.

The one thing that lets the side down is the wine list, the cheapest are $35 which is alright if not wonderful, but the next step up the ladder is $45 and considering the kind of place it is lets things down a bit.

7/10

Sounds great. $50 for a night out is great value, especially in Auckland. I don't know how they can afford to do that, I would have hought they would need to turn the table over a bit quicker than that to make any money,

Thanks for the post, I will have to check it out.

Bosco Verde on Greenwoods Corner. Really good Italian food, portions are always more than enough for us to eat. A mains is about $20-30, very reasonable for what you get. Not the biggest restaurant, but almost always a table. Would recommend.

Zoo Keepers son, in Royal Oak. It is more of a pub, however the family goes there for dinner plenty of time, no issues with small children. The waiters are extremely friendly and I don't believe it is to expensive either. As I said, it is more of a pub so pub food, but very good nonetheless. Good for a Sunday evening when you just can't be bothered cooking and want a relaxing meal, or meet up with some friends for a drink. :)
