On the subject of packaging... bought a boxed set of all the Monkey island games a few years ago, came in a massive fancy looking box (think 3x the size of most game packaging), and inside was.... 5 CDs in paper sleeves. That was it. No manuals, bonus gimmicks etc. They could have been put into a DVD case or two and had more than enough room...

Packaging is serious business.

HP gear is infamous for it's awesome packaging. If you buy storage gear it will come with sundry bits like SFPs, GBICs, or really back in the day, SCSI terminators. Supposing you ordered 4, you'd get 4 boxes about A4 in size and 5cm high, each containing a single terminator. Those boxes (plus filler) would be in a single larger box.

Was that set produced by HP?

A bit off topic, but The *worst* excessive packaging I suffered was when I bought a CD and CD single from Amazon, in 2002, and paid $150 NZD including shipping!!! From memory the CDs were $30 of that. The CDs were ones that at the time could not be obtained in NZ. When it arrived it was 2 CDs in a box that could hold 2 boot sized shoe boxes! It was full of those pockets of air packaging. Overkill. Never bought from Amazon after that.

As for the plastic packaging OP is talking about, I dislike it, and another thing is because it is often destroyed while opening, its very dissuasive to returning the product if there is an issue or if its not right, but thats just me.

I remember returning some defective headphones to DSE (same day that I bought them) with the plastic packaging all ripped up. I agree that it dissuades you, but in this case the product was clearly defective (buzzing sound over everything).

Reminds me of the time I brought the Stargate SG1 Complete Collection when it first came out from Amazon US, was simply sitting in a cardboard box the entire time just plastic wrapped.

Well I've calmed down since last night now ... and with a rational head back on .. i still hate the f'ing packaging! :-) It's not even recyclable! If they are worried about product tampering then just have it in a sealed paper bag inside a cardboard box ? It's not like people were dropping like flies in the old days before heatsealed hardshell plastic packaging! :-( Wonder how you go about lobbying to get companies to sort things like this out ? I'm not a fluffy greeny type normally, but this is just rampant waste that can be easily avoided, and for probably much cheaper costs.

I've had problems returning stuff with the sealed plastic packaging damaged so have always tried to open in with the minimum of intrusive cuts so it could be repackaged without showing any opening damage to the packaging. Tearing it open and then returning it to the store has had some shop assistants say that it can not be resold in its present state.

Well, if they're trying to resell defective goods then torn-up packaging is a good caution to the prospective buyer ;)

How about that style of plastic packaging for cigarettes then?

Probably a better deterrent than going plain

Heh great thread, I've wrestled many an item from that stupid plastic packaging.
The most ridiculous packaging I've had was from Digikey. 10x ICs each measuring 5x5mm came in a massive tube-in-bag-in-box-in-bag that was about 60cm long and 30cm wide.

I've got tears in my eyes. The tiny box strapped to a pallet is my favourite!
