Or we could admit the problem is a bit more complicated than something a smack could solve.

It is too late for these kids, their behaviour is set , at least, until they mature.

Discipline must be instilled from an early age, while the brain is still developing.

You can probably tell how a kid will be like once they reach 5 years old.

So what do we do in the here and now? I am guessing euthanasia is not seen as a valid option?

We can't seriously be contemplating the writing off of a generation, can we?

If today's teenagers are significantly different and this is not just 'us oldies' bemoaning the youth of today can we actually do anything?

If so, what?

Or is Western Civilisation doomed, again?

Those kids are the _result_ of lack of discipline, enforcing it now through means other than enforced military service would probably be too-little, too-late. If they'd been disciplined properly from day 1, they possibly would've been less offensive at this stage.

So reintroduction of military service is an option?

My only objection to this is that modern the military doesn't want ill-disciplined losers as they don't have such a need for 'cannon fodder' as they used to.

Didn't anybody tell you I was a hacker?

I think we're safe just now, but who knows, maybe Rome fell because of increasingly out of control youths?

I am talking about a hardcore minority.  Even a 100% increase in a small minority is still likely to be a slightly larger minority.

Most miscreants would tend to realise the error of their ways by the time they reach their middle ages.

To all the people saying that $600K is too much of a compensation. Just to take it to the extreme, what kind of compensation would you be happy with if you were raped?..

I am pro reasonable force when disciplining kids. The problem is that the majority of people who can actually exercise being "reasonable" in disciplining kids I'm sure would've been fine even without resorting to physical punishment.

The current problems stem from kids being brought up in the environment of "entitlement" and general lack of respect for authority as well as lack of responsibility for your actions. These are part of the more global problem of the more and more liberal laws, running way ahead of the consciousness and education levels in the society.

If we are going to leave people like this alive and free in society then we need them actually afraid of punishment, and a smack isn't going to do it.

I disagree with that, I think a smack and a good telling off would do that. I do not think I am pro or anti smacking but believe smacking has it's time and place. I don't believe in a cotton wall society where you never get hit but can see why the anti smacking law exist, because some parents went way past any bruise and took their anger out on their kids by beating the sh*t out of them within an inch of their life, literally.

That would require the will to actually do something they would be scared of. Put it this way, does anybody know the names of the attackers? Where they live? Who their families are? What jobs their parents have? Where their younger siblings go to school? What their Facebook or Twitter accounts are? We would need to seriously get into their lives and make a credible threat.

Their names and phone numbers have already been leaked to the internet. I even see a website has been set up for each one of them with their name as the url saying what they did with a link to the video. Apparently police have increased security around their houses. One of them has received over 1000 death threats.

Also in response to people saying 'The current problems stem from kids being brought up in the environment of "entitlement" and general lack of respect for authority as well as lack of responsibility for your actions.'

how much do you think lack of parents has an impact on this, i.e mum and dad at work 9-5?

video goes viral > $600,000 donations from around the world?received?in a about a week

Dare I say it, what they did was disgusting sure and I feel for the lady but In?perspective?the incident is not that bad, there are far worse things going on in the world.

Totally agree, poor woman, but happens to regularly to a lot of people.

No where near as bad as that awful Kony 2012 video. ?Had ignored it completely up until a few weeks ago, saw about 30 seconds of it, and just though "narcissist" and turned it off.

Also, has anyone seen teh article about how charity muggers, or Chuggers, are all run through an Australian company, Cornucopia, who take 70-90% of all first year donations for "admin" purposes?

http://www.stuff.co.nz/dominion-post/news/local-papers/the-wellingtonian/6277656/Wellington-donations-sent-to-Australia

Basically the message from the Charities Commission(changing to DIA on the 1st July), if approached, don't donate to street collectors for:
- Red Cross 80%?
- Fred Hollows
- Oxfam 90%
- IHC

Best to try donate online, since you won't run into?Cornucopia, and it's high fees

Exactly, it goes on all the time, not that what happened was terrible though. I saw a teacher at my old school get treated far worse. I have been treated worse myself when at school. Those were however in the days when there was not much int he way of the internet.

I have seen far worse things at schools too. I think peoples own experiences and the fact she is old and shouldn't have to be putting up with this is why this video has been so popular and led to so many donations.

crackrdbycracku: OK, I'm a non-parent but I think the 'just give them a smack approach' is a bit simplistic, don't you?

Sure these kids are extreme and action needs to be taken but does anybody really think that in this instance a smack would make any difference other than to allow us to pat ourselves on the back and say 'we did something'? A smack would just make them more bitter and probably mean the next attack wouldn't be filmed.

If we are going to leave people like this alive and free in society then we need them actually afraid of punishment, and a smack isn't going to do it. That would require the will to actually do something they would be scared of. Put it this way, does anybody know the names of the attackers? Where they live? Who their families are? If we are looking at punishment then that's a better track than smacking. In former communist countries lots of people were scared of authority; sometimes it worked out, sometimes not so much.

Or we could admit the problem is a bit more complicated than something a smack could solve.

It's not up to the authorities to discipline peoples kids. thats where everything has gone wrong. People need to punish their own children.
Pay attention to them, don't replace love and quality time with Ipods and Ipads and money.
Spoilt little ****s.

I think it's funny how money solves everything.
"i was raped, i make make a report to the police 40 years later and try get the so and so charged and then get a large sum of money. That will make me feel better."

Or soemones family member getting killed in a car accident.
Don't worry money and reparation will make everything nice and new again.

Poor lady but why throw money at her.

So it is up to the authorities, us in other words, to tell people how to parent?
