No, this is actually easily close to the norm. Electricians have always traditionally been the trade to install TV aerials on new builds and also to connect and run the phone cabling. It is still very common to find dedicated phone lines daisy chained throughout a new house to dedicated phone only outlets, of which the broadband modem is plugged into one of them.

The advice to call someone qualified is right, but most home-owners don't realise the need for data and TV aerials to receive more specific attention, let alone many tradespeople. Phone lines should have master splitters installed and TV aerials should no longer be multiband 'Gizmo' styled aerials just because the local wholesaler says "this is what everyone else is installing"...

Can beat that. Friends house was wired with the antenna virtually in a daisy chain just using splitters with unterminated ports on them stuffed in behind the wall outlets. Not even taps which would be closer to acceptable.

Anyway, freeview was dead on one mux on a couple of bedrooms till we swapped out the 4 port splitter in the flushbox with a joiner in another room that wasnt being used.

I am surprised that electricians even think of going around touching the splitters without knowing what they are about.

Splitters are there because they give better voice and broadband performance than filters. Removing the splitter will make broadband and voice quality drop.

We will soon read here from another home owner asking why his broadband is so slow.

Being a sparky myself, I know that in the last five to ten years home wiring has changed dramatically. doing my apprenticeship many years ago I remember not being taught bugger all on phone networks, it wasn't until I became interested in data and technology that I was showed and taught more, I ended up becoming the data guy at work.

I know that at the company I work for now I don't think any of the sparkys doing their apprenticeship would learn much about data or voice cabling at all. Voice, data and coax cabling is almost a separate trade now days. Smaller company's may dabble in doing voice and data, but guys learning at bigger company's prob won't.
