The GeoNet site says it was felt in BOP, but I'm in Whakatane and didn't feel it.

Some of the reaction from Wellington has struck me as a bit melodramatic. It was a good firm shake - enough to wake me up - but I didn't think it was any worse than the one that we had here in mid December.

Having said that I can imagine that it would have been quite strong and frightening in Taranaki and Wanganui.

Quite a few variable comments on Stuff website, from 15 seconds to 2 minutes. Some seemed a bit overstated, but a good shake will be new to them and no doubt scary. What really annoyed me were some ChCh posters (I am in ChCh) who showed no empathy, seemed more concerned with "ours was bigger". Sad attitude.

I live in central Wellington - and it was not 15 seconds long.

The event end to end felt like about 2 minutes - the actual jolt might have been short - but it rippled and rolled and rolled for a while. Felt like at least 2 minutes - and I can say that because we had time to get the kids, get dressing gowns and other clothes on, hide under the doorframes, talk about what was happening and so on.

The pull handles on a set of drawers we have in the house were rattling with good frequency for quite some time.

When Chch happened in Sept 2010 we heard it coming like a high speed train and felt it go through - barely time to react.

Relatives in Palmerston North (near toyota) said it was powerful there - they thought it was the big one hitting wellington - and really gave them a fright.

Yeah I live cbd Wellington on the 5th floor of an apartment building so we had quite a sway going. It probably lasted over a minute of swaying. Enough to sit up, get grabbed by the better half and have her worry about getting dressed and out of the building. Through ignorance or otherwise I never felt it was bad enough to run for the hills but we did worry that Christchurch might have just had a big mamma.

Didn't feel it in Hamilton, although I was in a movie theatre watching Prometheus, 10:36 would have been around the time a giant alien spaceship was crashing and rolling.

Certainly noticed it in Christchurch - actually got quite a fright, TV and lights wobbled. I initially picked it as local one in the mid 4's

Just turned light off after reading in bed when it came (Kapiti). It was definitely the best/longest shake I had felt in a while here (or in Wgtn where I work some of the week). I try to be conservative with time estimates (it always seems like forever!!) and I can only guess that it was at least 30 seconds. Long rolling rumble/shake with a jolly good jolt in the middle of it. Enough to set the dog off and for us to hope like hell it wasn't a big jolt under Wellington or an even bigger one in Chch!! But still not enough to dislodge anything significant from shelves etc

Why such a big difference?

If you research this a bit you'll find how they make these determinations... and there's some variations in the modelling as well. But, in a nutshell remember agencies in other countries are basing their estimations on data received on the sensor arrays they have (generally) in their countries. So the fact they're able to get in the ballpark for an event that some of the local population didn't even notice is pretty damn good.

instead of taking cover I tweeted - yes it was a long one but far from bigger jolts I've experienced. I felt it coming as the building creaked lightly before it hit

I heard it coming like a bass rumble quite a while ahead of it being clearly noticeable as an earthquake. It think what surprised us was that it was it's full intensity for quite a while, rather than a one off jolt and decreasing power. Luckily it was very deep, so no damage done, but quite an unusual one for sure.

(Palmerston North by the way, and friends felt it in Napier/Christchurch too).

There are still unsecured TV's in NZ???? I'd be amazed if an insurance company paid out for damaged TV's in the future - there is no excuse for not having them secured nowadays.

OP - heard and felt it here in Christchurch. Thought it was just another wee local aftershock, but it was still large enough to rattle the doors.
