Both my kids were born in Australia, and my youngest (she's 11) considers herself to be fiercely Australian, despite being 3 when we moved back home. She even has a Wallabies cap that my wife bought for her behind my back :-)

Yeah the odd one can go feral. Two of ours currently live there.

Somewhat off topic, but related to credit cards and photo ID...

Until a few months ago, my credit card actually had my photo on it. Every two years the replacement card would arrive with the same photo from when I first got it as an undergrad student 20 years ago. Lost a little hair in that time, but I like to think it still looked a bit like me. In reality, nah not much.

The card would also come with my signature from 20 years ago printed on it, and so much smaller than what I actually signed as to be an unrepeatable scrawl. I rarely paid for stuff by signature anyway.

The new one has a chip, no photo, no preprinted signature. But it amused me that the bank kept them on the card for two decades.

allan: Went to a show a Auckland's Vector Arena on Sunday night and collected the pre-booked tickets. Had a copy of the emailed booking confirmation, but then had to produce in order:

- the credit card to which the booking had been charged
- some form of photo ID (why, how did they know what I looked like in the first place?)
- and then finally had to sign for them

More than a little over the top I think, or maybe i am just used to people being more trusting in Wellington e.g. I have noticed way less petrol pumps on pre-pay here than in some other parts of the country.

They probably see a lot of fraud / dodgy behaviour.

You order online, so they haven't seen the CC...and you had to sign. The same thing happens at Dominoes if you order pizza online.

They want to make sure you are the same person whose name is on the credit card...so they want photo ID to tie your face to the credit card.

Makes sense to me.

You'd be annoyed if someone turned up with your credit card (obtained however - valid number, yours - embossed on fake card stock...maybe based on a stolen cc statement or other past transaction) and picked up your tickets before you did.

This seems to help prevent this happening...and it must have happened or they wouldn't do the check.

You possibly have a point. But if you talk to anyone who missed out on tickets to high demand events only to see tickets being on-sold on TradeMe with horrendous markups, you'll understand the desire to do whatever can be done to slow down this practice.

This! It pisses me off when I miss out on tickets to an event because someone bought 20 to sell at a big profit on TM! It is about time the ticketing companies did something about it. Finally. (Even though it has been a condition on tickets for many, many years that they either could not be on sold, or could only be on sold at the original price, everyone turned a blind eye to it!)

Some places you need a Passport to purchase a prepay simcard.

As for the post, I don't see it as being over. A lot of people do share their credit cards and their PIN numbers. Hence the photo. The signature backs that up again and it proves that you signed it - you had picked up the tickets, like doing a EFTPOS cashout.

Wow things must be bad in Auckland lol never had to show my credit card to verify the number it was paid from when getting a pizza I often go in for my friend when he pays online for them without the card just say pick up for .....

As for the point of the photo ID it's not a case of knowing what you looked like prior it's confirming you are the card holder that's purchased the tickets plain and simple. If you don't match the person for which the photo id belongs to and they're not the person who has paid for the item then pretty much you should not be trying to claim the purchase. As someone pointed out if someone else turned up with your card you wouldn't want them to hand the tickets over just like that.

Using the signing for cash out scenario is also not that realistic either sure they often make you sign but only probably about 20% of the time do they take notice of it. Reality is that it's just as much about showing that someone who is not the checkout operator (or store front person) adding cash out with you being not aware until later on as unless you use something like shop and go then chances are you would just take their word for how much you need to pay.

Add that to if you don't take the receipt they can straight after claim a cancelled transaction and get the cash out for themselves (If they're that way inclined) as all they need is the receipt number.

khull: thats pretty standard experience for me. even ordering a pizza online for pick up you'd be expected to show the card you used for the order.

i've never experienced that with pizza on delivery, and for pickup you usually pay when you pickup?

Well thanks for all the input (including the digressions to Australia) but I'm still of the opinion its over the top given that it only applies to one purchase method.

To collect me tickets in person I have an email with my name printed on the top which shows the purchase details. I then produce the same credit card with which the purchase was made, followed by photo id and then I sign for them.

Vs I make the same purchase but get the tickets couriered to me. No presenting my credit card, no photo id, no signature except to the courier and needn't be mine anyway.

It's simply not consistent.

Compare your experience to one last week. I created an account for a ticketing agency and purchased two tickets to a show in Auckland that was on last Friday night. I did this online. I then emailed the ticket confirmation to a relative with a Happy Birthday message. She had to print the PDF and exchange this for the tickets at the venue. She doesn't have either a driver's license or a credit card so ID is not so easy for her. The email message was all she needed to collect the tickets (thank goodness, because I sure couldn't travel up country just to show my credit card etc).

In hindsight, I should have had the tickets couriered to her address but I didn't. I'm so relieved that she wasn't asked to jump through the hoops you had to jump through!

The only reason I can think of for wanting photo ID is that the ticketing agency wants to match the credit-card with its owner, e.g. it hasn't been lost or stolen and is being used by someone who doesn't own the CC account.

Quite why that would be the problem of the ticket-seller though I don't know.

Did Eric Clapton really think she looked wonderful...or was it after the 15th outfit she tried on and he just wanted to get to the party and get a drink?
