Its very seldom that you can sucessfully pricematch between bunnings and mitre10 since they always drop the instore price to below the other ones advertised price, and neither will accept a photo instore of the price of things as proof.

Then you get to the different supplier sku's for things, like mitre10 might get a slightly different box for the same sander that includes a few pieces of sandpaper or something so its not the same item.

But watch out for their credit card surcharges, it may end up deared than doing it yourself on-line. Had a not very pleasant experience with them about this about 2.5 years ago (prior to airlines sur-charging when booking directly on-line).

Sometimes I use big words I don't always fully understand in an effort to make myself sound more photosynthesis.

Dick Smith (at least in Johnsonville) said they would price match, appear to still price match in theory, but recently proved remarkably difficult about actually doing so in practice.

Wouldn't do it based on the competitors website, insisted I provide a print ad (mailer or newspaper) which fortunately I had in the car, and then insisted on first calling that retailer to verify they had the item, that it really was that model at that price, *and* that they still had stock on the shelf. Then, and only then, would the manager (grumpily) match.

I haven't been back there since.

I have been through the same thing, and that was a couple of years ago when they had big signs in the store saying they would price match. But I mucked around for half an hour whilst their manager contacted the competitor store, it just wasn't worth the small amount saved. But they don't have any signs the last time I visited, which is now about 6 months, so I don't think they do it anymore.

My three experiences with 3 different retailers.

1) Mitre 10, Bunnings had cheaper paint so I called them on it. Manager called to check the had stock, then proceeded to bitch and moan. Was very hostile to me. Said he would match their price but didn't give me the percent off. Now I avoid that mitre 10 on principal. Fail.
2) Dick Smith, asked if they would price match Noel Leeming on a hard drive (difference was $10 or so). Flatly refused. Don't shop at that store anymore. Fail.
3) Harvey Norman, walked into tory street store asked the sales rep if they'd match LV Martin on a bluray player. He said he'd take a look on the computer and then said yes. Win!

The thing that is sad is that some places would lose out on a sale or repeat business for a couple of bucks.

I have had success at Bunnings. I was shopping for 3 metre lenghts of Channel Drain. Price was around about $80 if I recall and it so happended that Mitre10 and Bunnnings had the exact same SKU. 15c Cheaper at Mitre10. The guy at Bunnings got a bit grumpy about it all, made the call to Mitre10 to confirm and all that but in the end had to abide by their policy of 15% off. I needed 3 of them, ended up saving $36 odd.

i found mightyapes price matching a joke personally. its a webstore, and they only seem to price match against local stores, ask them to price match against nzgameshop.com and they might take a few cents off their sticker price.

sure its not a nz based store, but its in nz dollars, free shipping to nz and shares the same market as mightyape. their prices are so much cheaper, mightyape really need to do something about this, ive stopped buying from them now, and i bet im not the only one.

ive had jb price match a tv that was stickered at $600 more, but i got it from a friend who worked there... he said they would be selling it at a slight loss, and still had to throw in some batteries and screen cleaner (reduced price of tv even further to get total the same as just tv from other store) cos they get in trouble if they dont sell the "accessories".
but they could price match pbtech on a keyboard...

Must agree with this.

I have never had a successful price match request with MightyApe despite providing relevant information. The response is usually to shave an amount off but then that benefit is usually cancelled out by having to pay for shipping.

same here. I have tried to price match twice with mighty ape (once vs DSE, once vs another website), both times unsuccessfully.

No longer bother with Mighty Ape, JB HiFi are usually cheaper and you don't need to pay for shipping, nzgameshop is significantly cheaper.

I've found that JB HiFi are more than happy to price match on any sort of big-ticket item (TVs, stereos etc) and usually seem to be pretty open to "knocking a few bucks off" if you have a go on lesser-priced items (sub $1k).

Seems bizarre that companies advertise the fact that they price match, then bitch & moan when people try it, surely it's doing them more harm and good as evidenced by the number of people in this thread who have been put off doing repeat business as a result of their whining about it.
