Maybe the ads are not targeted at idle geeks

The telecom turtle ad always has me thinking "Yeah, the turtle... now what were they selling again?"

The VF one has me going "OK, it's a cheeky Maori kid joke I can live with that" but this kid is no Billy T.

But it could be worse. The KiwiBank ads are pretty much unforgivable. Yeah, I want a rule breaking, rebel bank run by children who jump off rocks into (lets hope deep enough) water without supervising adults. Forgive me, but isn't that pretty much how the Global Financial Crisis happened?

Ads often work inversely to desired. Example; I will refuse to deal with State insurance or buy McCains products because of their inane advertisements.

I also fail to see the corelations to someone proficient in an ancient martial art for assassins and someone who shows you how to download an app on your phone, or a turtle and a cellphone network.

I guess it isn't easy trying to come up with advertising concepts for telcos. We all know who they are, the products and services they are pushing aren't really differentiated so actually trying to inform us isn't going to do much.

We already have all the information we can get from an ad campaign and the other stuff such as which plan will work for you or which phone you want isn't easy to put across in a TV ad. Basically, you will choose a phone and plan based on your needs and budget. It will be a considered decision, not an impulse buy.

So, all they can really do is try and associate the brand with something positive or memorable, in these cases turtles and ninjas.

Yeah, as State Insurance shows; it could always be worse.

As entertaining TV, yes. As a reason to have insurance with State, NO.

I always thought they were as ironic as Telecom's turtle broadband ads.  "Destroyed exports to china"... um, I hate to say it but I'm pretty sure not even State's going to approve THAT claim!  "What's that you say?  Eight billion dollars?  Hmm, I think that's a bit over your coverage limit..."

John, when it comes to ads the latest one by your company sucks...  I cringe when I see it associating tech people with that image.

But when it comes to brand awareness, what's this Telecom ad they're talking about?  (Point made?)

Marketing and advertising are very funny. For example: I used to hate that advertisement about "Spray and Walk Away". I didn't get it at the beginning but it seems like everyone knows about it. And now I actually bought that product just because it stuck in my memory. So if you actually remember the ads, they are already half successful :)

I don't know what I missed.... but you did realise that my comment was a complement to your companies ad guys?

Sure, I don't personally 'like' the ad, but it got my attention, same can't be said for the Telecom ads.  I have no idea what ads people are talking about with respect to Telecom.

I've seen the VF one more than once that I can recall.

And the inference that they now provide coverage for dream-related losses.

I in no way support the underlying premise, but in the Agree/Disagree radio ads from British American Tobacco Company disputing the plain packaging initiative - if you want people to take notice, at least use Kiwi actors for the voices and not Australians...
