First, Telecom. Their ad depicts this kid who is obsessed by a turtle. He talks to it incessantly. “Blah, Blah, Blah, Blah!” The turtle remains immobile and unblinking, while a bloke, presumably the kid’s father looks on proudly. But there is good reason to believe that the kid has signs of early psychosis and is in need of treatment from a psychiatrist. In addition, the immobility of the unblinking turtle suggests that it is either a statue or stuffed (?with cabbage). Presuming that the ad got past the Children’s Commissioner and the RSPCA, we have to ask the question as to how the ad encourages interest in Telecoms $19 plan?

As for Vodafone, their ad depicts a Maori youth talking to a callow young customer rep, who is labelled “Ninja”. Now, if you google ‘Ninja functions’ you get “espionage, sabotage, infiltration and assassination”. Now, none of these abilities is likely to be helpful in customer relations. In addition, you are told that the Ninja is able to become invisible at will and, having been a customer in a few Vodafone stores, I can verify that staff can be at your shoulder one minute and have disappeared the next, never to be seen again! Does the ad encourage you to join Vodafone?

I have a conspiracy theory that the “ad-men” were children in the 80’s and 90’s and were fans of a TV series,“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”. Now all “grown-up”(?), they have utilised their childhood passion, but the juxtaposition of Ninja and Turtle may imply the future amalgamation of Vodafone and Telecom!

"Ninja" is also used as a reference to a person with incredible skills. Perhaps this is the reference they are trying to convey?

I thought the Vodafone ad was a lame copy of the Apple genius ads.

I wonder if "Ninja" is used as a reference to someone who will be "mocked mercilessly" as is no doubt the fate of Vodafone retail sales assistants from now on...

The premise behind this thread reminds me of this...

Q. How many geeks does it take to ruin a joke?
A. You mean nerd, not geek. And not joke, but riddle. Proceed.

It is silly feel good advertising nothing more. It works on the premise if they can make you have a good feeling about something (anything) then you will associate that feeling with the brand from then on. Works for Coke Bah! humbug!

idle: Telco ads. Are they worthwhile?

Given that you took the time and energy to start a thread about it, and people are taking the time and energy to respond (including myself) certainly shows that people take notice of them.  Doesn't quite answer the question of whether it makes them worthwhile, but would certainly contribute to the marketing folk and the advertising company saying "objective achieved'.

To be honest, I've always wondered why Telecom is trying to associate a turtle with their service. A turtle. One of the slowest creatures known to man, and Telecom is trying to associate it with their broadband internet services.

Someone's two eggs short of a pavlova.

All of the OP's points are null and void. There is a cute turtle and a child. Two things you need for success is a child/infant and an animal. If either or both of these two things appear to be vulnerable or precious, all the better.

That was my very first thought as well.

The Ninja one gets me too:  The VF agent is asked if he can do all of the usual things that most people associate with ninjas, and in each case he has to answer "No".

What strikes me every time I see the ninja ad is that the guy is 'Zeb' (Hayden Frost) out of "The Almighty Johnsons" TV series. Kind of colours how I view the ad.

Yeah, I get that with the energy saving ads with Hod, god of all things cold and dark.
