Also another thing I have learned is your brakes can be close to useless and still pass a wof.

Just had a glance at my AMI policy document ...

No cover for unsafe vehicles.

The way I understand it then:

No Wof and vehicle is safe. You should be covered.

No Wof and vehicle is unsafe. You Probably not covered.

No wof, and insurance agent having a bad day, you probably also not covered..

It has to be street legal.
See above.

A car with no current WOF (In WOF condition) may be OK.
A car with no WOF, with say bald tyres and faulty breaks will not be insured.

As pointed out already, its quite simple. If your car has a fault that causes the claim. No insurance if expired wof. No rego is no factor in insurance

Where is the OP located?

Plenty of testing stations/ garages open this time of year !
On Road, VTNZ, private garages... you will find someone unless your in a one horse town.
(One Horse town refers to a small town with one pub).

To me regardless of whether your car was in WOF condition or not, if you haven't got a WOF and you drive it you're setting yourself up for drama. If you've got another car (as the OP does) why take the chance? Just seems a bit daft to me.

For those "but oz has cheap this and does that that other way" people .. There is no "wof" needed until you sell your car ... At least most states i cant speak for all states

I had a accident in my car with a expired WOF ,not my fault thought, and the insurance company told me even if it had been my fault if and my car was up to WOF standard I still would have been covered.

As already mentioned thought even if I had a WOF and my car wasn't up to WOF standard and this caused the crash I wouldn't be covered.
