The last thing I want is my cat getting bored inside the house all night; it's bad enough when it's raining and he keeps me awake!

May be he has had some cats crapping in his vege garden and decided to do something about it. He has got the resources!

I agree with nearly eaverything that he is saying, except for the part in bold.

I am advocating responsible pet ownership, not for people to bop their pets on the head. To me a responsible pet owner has their cat neutered, keeps it well fed and indoors as much as possible, and puts a bell on them. Then when their cat dies I think people should consider not replacing it.Councils also need to step up and manage cats like they do already with dogs, he said.

All cats should be registered, chipped and neutered, while setting live capture cage traps on your property and turning the miscreants over to the local authority should be encouraged.

No need to NOT have cats. People just need to be responsible about having them.

I also don't see why as a dog owner I have to pay annual licensing fees for my dogs. I'm only allowed 2 dogs. Yet our neighbours can have as many cats as they like, and they don't have to licence them.

By animal control. If you cat is caught outside overnight, it goes to sleep forever.

As for getting it inside....having had cats ever since I was a kid, I can safely say that a quick shake of the cat biscuit box at the front door never once failed to have them inside in a very timely manner.

Cats are creatures of habit. They pretty quickly get used to being inside every night and will quite happy comply, usually without prompt.

Do they? People generally let cats come and go as they please whereas dogs are fenced in (people own dogs, cats own people) I haven't heard of a big "feral dog" problem but there is certainly problems with feral cats.

Honestly, I think he is bored. He sold GMK and I believe has stepped back from other business interests over the last couple of years. I think he should stick to what he is good at - riding motorcycles around the world (I always enjoyed his books).

No they don't.

Dogs are not allowed to run around where they like, they generally have to be kept on leads.

Gareth Morgan has lost the plot. Who the hell does he think he is? He seems to think he's some kind of authority on everything.

For what it's worth we keep our cat inside at night because if we didn't we'd be paying a fortune in vet bills because he's a fighter. Plus the neighbourhood would be kept awake with the noise.

There's no problem getting him to come in, we started training him when very young and now he just turns up at the cat door at dinner time every night. Cat's can be trained.

Don't mess with the kitties.

No they don't.

That's a gross generalisation. In suburban areas, maybe. Rural? You know, where bush and native birds tend to live? Not so much. Having cats registered and neutered, I totally agree with. Banning them? Insane notion.

You are quite right, he should probably have said the same for dogs too. Give the guy some slack though, he's the first to introduce such a laudable but radical idea, he probably realises people need some time to get their head around it before widening the debate to include other problem species like dogs.
