NZtechfreak: I think the OP is taking liberties with the coroners findings here.

I think the liberty taking comes from the media. Basically, 'Coroner makes reasonable finding and recommendations in case of woman's death', won't sell many newspapers. 'Woman Dies from Drinking too much Coke, Warnings Called for' will.

Having got that off my chest. I've been thinking about responsibility a lot lately.

I agree that this woman and her family were responsible for her death. I read some stuff written at the time which suggested there were some deeper issues with her. But it isn't the responsibility of Coca-Cola, that's pretty clear.

However, how does this contrast with the 'buyer beware' attitude we take to leaky homes?

Buy a house that was consented, inspected and approved by a council; the house then gets built buy a 'professional builder'; then you get told it is leaky, uninhabitable and will need to be repaired, often by the council which originally approved it. It is entirely your responsibility as the home owner.

What do you all think?

Didn't anybody tell you I was a hacker?

The topic of "Why are people not held accountable for their own actions these days ?" is becoming more and more of any issue, and not just in terms of killing yourself with Coke.

Think of all the big corporation CEOs these days who consistently miss targets and often run businesses into the ground - but always seem to get their performance bonus no matter what.

Wow, just wow!

So she was serverely ill for 6 months and possible didn't do anything about it?

or did she go to the doctor in that time? My doctor would have asked about my diet, if I was eating properly and sent me to a dietitian.

The council has a legal responsibility to define and enforce building standards that are meant to ensure a house is not leaky. It is not at all irresponsible to rely on the council's judgement that a house is acceptable, even if it later turns out it was not. After all, the council can require you to demolish something that's not to code, even if you are a PhD engineer and are absolutely sure it could withstand a nuclear attack. The flip side of that authority to compel is to take the responsibility also.

However Coke's only legal responsibility is to make the most money as it can in any way possible for it's shareholders. This includes breaking any and all laws as long as the fines are less than the profits. It most certainly is your responsibility to know advertising bulls**t from reality when it comes to people who peddle sugar water.

Very harsh.

This case is sad, a woman has died prematurely as a result of multiple illnesses, not something to make light of etc.

BigHammer: Drinking 10 litres of water a day will eventually kill you apparently. The fault is her own. Her family should also shoulder some of the blame. Not the fault of Coca-Cola in view. Not one bit. It wouldn't matter what you put on the product label.

Sh1t! Thanks for the heads up. I am going to put warning labels on all my taps immediately! I might have to put some sort of padlock on my outside tap tho - imagine if a hobo died after drinking from it. I would never survive in prison - I am far too pretty.

Of course media are putting out in a way to maximise attention, but the actual piece the OP linked to is quite clear about the coroners opinion, and it isn't at all how it was represented in the OP here.

Apart from being in rather poor taste, this displays a terrible understanding of the gene pool. This woman has already had EIGHT children.

xpd: Look at smoking... packs are now pretty much screaming (or were) "THIS WILL KILL YOU" and people still smoke... Coke could call it "Killer Cola" and people will still do it...

Hell yeah; if I was Coke's lawyer I would have stood up in court and said 'Your Worship, as every human being intelligent enough to remember that "breathe in" comes after "breathe out" knows, Coke is basically poison. Drink it at your own risk.'

Humans don't know that breathe in comes after breathe out. Breathing is a reflex action. I have had the misfortune to work with / meet people who would probably not be here if they actually had to think about breathing.....

In general, I believe the world is in 'not the best shape', and it is all to do with the lack of personal responsibility and accountability.

In the same vein as this discussion, I have no sympathy for the 15 yr old girl whose mother allowed her to go to a party organised by a bunch of 18 yr olds, then went on tv condoning the daughter being at the party and drinking alcohol without her supervision (let alone drinking at all).

At 15, If my mum thought there was so much as a whiff of alcohol at a party I was going to then I was kept at home. How times have changed in 20 years.

I weep for the youth in this country - who think it is their right to do whatever they want then b1tch about the consequences.

Queue rant about teen drivers dying whilst outrunning the cops - I could go on all day....
