why don't you get both (Telecom vs Vodafone) and give us your personal experience then we'll know the score for the folks vs johnr :)

PS do not leave valueables in the car in touristy spots (beaches, etc) it seems some Kiwis have a habit of breaking into and taking everything including the car sometimes

The widgets and applications you're using are data hogs and will absolutely motor through your usage pack.... speaking from personal experience. If you're going to be diligent about their use, 500mb should be adequate, but that's not been my experience.

2Degrees has really effective pricing for the Metro areas (AKLD/WLG/ROT), but uses Vodafone for national roaming in between, and that rate is pretty uninspiring.

I have also found that the performance on 2D mobile is starting to wane a bit as the customer load is going up, so you definitely get what you pay for.

Vodafone Prepay Smart is a more balanced across text/voice/data package, not really for the data hog. Broadband Plus is $50 for 2GB and should be more than enough for 10 days.

So horses for courses really. I don't know where Telecom's investment programme is regarding mobile capacity, but Voda has spent a good amount recently continuing to build stuff out.

Try Skinny prepaid. They use the Telecom network, so coverage is great. You can get sim cards & topups from Dick Smiths and Countdown.

$4 sim, comes with $4 credit. You can get 200mb data or 660 mins voice + 100mb data. It lasts one week.

$8 addon, 600mb data. Also lasts a week. You'd probably want a $4 for 200mb for the last few days

Total cost $16 NZD, loads of data, can top up anytime.

Just do not buy Skinny handsets. These are the only ones SIM locked in New Zealand.
