Hello all,

My parents and I are travelling to New Zealand from Australia for 9 to 10 days. Like any geek, I would love if it if I can have Internet access wherever I am. I was hoping to get some local advice about getting mobile phone Internet access in New Zealand for a short period of time. I have an iPad (fourth generation) and my mum and I both have iPhone 5s. I am travelling with family and we don't really need to retain our Australian numbers while we are there - the main thing I think is Internet access to be able to use Maps, Safari and send iMessages to friends back home. The ability to make phone calls between us (not internationally) would be good too.

Last time I was in New Zealand we purchased a pre-paid sim from Telstra and loaded some data and calls to it. I felt like we got a bit ripped off though, because it wasn't that cheap to initially buy the SIM card, there were limitations as to where we could use our data, and a few folks told us Telstra's coverage (or TelstraClear as it seems to be called - just Googled them now) wasn't that great. When we fell outside of the range, we actually ended up purchasing another prepaid SIM card from a company I can't remember the name of. But they were very nice and it seemed much more cost effective.

So I was just wondering what you would do if you were a temporary resident to NZ and wanted to get Internet access to your iPhone or iPads. And if there's any particularly good deals or ways to do this. Thanks!

PS if it helps, we are going to Auckland, then Rotorua, then Wellington over the course of this week and a half.

:)

You might look at a Telecom SIM card on prepay then.

I agree.
Here are a few links useful for you:

The prepaid plans.

SIM Card costs ($5).

The mobile market has changed dramatically in recent years.

Thanks - something like this?

$5 SIM Card + $29 prepaid open term, 500MB data.

Which network do you think has the best coverage in NZ?

Telecom has the best coverage in NZ. Vodafone lags behind a little bit by my experience. 2Degrees only has their own coverage in the main centres; elsewhere you will roam onto Vodafone.

Hi naggyman.

Yep, seems like it's come a long way since we last came. 2Degrees was the one we bought after Telstra.

I will definitely grab a Telecom SIM card then from a shop in Auckland. We are arriving Saturday. Pretty excited!!

Thanks heaps for your help :)

I would not agree with this have you checked out the RBI sites Vodafone have deployed? I would also say Vodafone has a much bigger dual carrier footprint

Telecom's $19 pack is a good starting point, however if you want a bit more data then 2degrees offers 1 GB for $20 (but no included calls or texts). 2D's coverage isn't as good as Telecom's but it should be fine in AKL/ROT/WLG. I believe that there is also an option for sharing a single data plan across multiple devices, but that would require three SIMs and it may be easier to just use the iPhone's hotspot function.

Oh and the other thing (this is about my third edit!) is that a Telecom SIM will work straight away in an Apple device, but a 2D one will require you to manually configure various settings (APNs). Telecom is certainly the easiest option.

I am meaning REAL experience. I have found that Telecom seems to have better coverage in areas where I am. I think we are too early in the RBI to see the difference. I also disagree with the way that the RBI is being rolled out - particularly how it essentially is the Govt paying for Vodafone to make more money. I would have preferred them to have rolled out a SOE with LTE towers.

In Australia if we run out of data on a pre-paid pack you can buy more through the carrier's website by entering your credit card details, and the amount is usually applied instantly or within an hour (these websites generally work on that network even if you don't have any data left.) Is that the same with someone like Telecom or 2Degrees?

Just looking up what RBI is. Sounds like the equivalent of our NBN (National Broadband Network) including just as much controversy.

It is equivalent to the LTE part of the NBN. The fibre part is our UFB.

I'm getting off topic here, but apparently future RBI sites will have LTE (however I may have read it on Stuff so take it with a grain of salt!)

You are correct Vodafone has confirmed this but we need some 700Mhz for the fastest deployment

Back on topic please.

Vodafone and Telecom coverage are similar in the locations you are going to. Check both prepay plans and use the one you feel best for your needs.

2degrees is ok but its low priced mobile broadband is only available in some main centres. While on the road you are likely to roam on Vodafone, in which case your prepay will have to have a different "flavour" of their mobile broadband, which costs more.

Stick with the two national ones and you will be fine.

AFAIK RBI is for fixed cellular data, not for mobile devices, so not for the OP.
