2. I seem to remember reading that Sanitarium is owned by the Seventh Day Adventist Church and don't pay any company tax..

I take it you don't eat Weet-Bix and Sanitarium peanut butter either?

alasta: It's not real Marmite though. It's just an NZ made imitation.

I've heard all about this. My partner became heavily involved (from a distance eg Facebook) with the drama that was being caused by Sanitarium and Piccadilly Circus down here in CHCH,

Needless to say, Vegemite is better, anyway. Marmite and Ma'amite is too sweet.

Have you had Home Brand Weet-Bix? I'd rather support a cult that produces good Weet-bix, then eat that rubbish.

But I do get Pic's Peanut Butter....much nicer.

The UK Marmite yes.
The kiwis ruined it.

I think it is obvious that we are all very passionate about our yeasty spreads.

But Vegemite is still the best.

On another note, I would like to try the South African stuff... Is it any good? Which "mite" is it most similar to?

I'm a vegemite fan myself and definitely not Australian... That being said - I think the way Sanitarium behaved towards that British chap was totally outrageous and they've certainly not done themselves any favours in my book...

I don't think that their behaviour was very Christian or Kiwi - and any loyalty I had for them is well gone.

You mean the British chap that could have sold "Our Mate" which is actually British Marmite rebranded for sale in a country where Sanitarium owns the trademark (and is legally obliged to defend it)?

I mean the british chap that imported Maa'mite that is named differently, branded differently, tastes differently and entering a market where Sanitarium Marmite isn't available anyway... They weren't defending their brand - they were fighting competition... Big difference.

Yep. I much prefer Vegemite to Marmite, and generally avoid Sanitarium products as much as possible as I do not support the idea of religious organisations paying no tax on business profits.

Do you feel the same way about many, many businesses owned by non-religious charities and which also distribute their profits charitably?

If you do then you will find that their are many, many worthy community causes that benefit from these distributions that will disagree with you.

If you don't, why pick on religious charitable trusts?

Note, I am not religious at all and have no such affiliations, am just wondering about your (and others) reasoning.

What other charitable trust are there like Sanitarium in NZ? Its big business so should pay tax.

Just checked, and yup "Maa'Mite" was simply a limited edition run of British Marmite, which can be purchased in New Zealand under the name "Our Mate".  Sale of it could indeed cause customer confusion, which is precisely why trademark laws exist, and why they were legally obliged to react.
