I wonder whats causing all these trademe (non)-alternatives to come crawling out of the woodwork recently

This honestly looks like a polytech students "project-assessment" turned into a live site.

Ironically they are using google adverts, and it advertises their web design competitors on it.

That is one reason I dont get why places who are using their website for advertising their services would ever run adwords on them. You have paid all that to get people onto your site, why accept peanuts to give them a reason to leave?

Exactly, although for some particular ads you can get paid quite well, but generally you need good traffic. Apparently there is a way to open adword links in a new window, so they don't leave the site.
