The amount of times he says "OK?" bugs me.

"You using ADSL2?" No, that will be like riding a horse and cart to the supermarket - I had to laugh at this. This guy sounded energetic at the start then very depressed near the end. Good job!

SaltyNZ:  Wow, 20Mbps... I wish I could get *half* that here where I live.

Well you need to give him a ring Salty...  His number is in the subject line, his call today came from the same number.

I think I've got your office number about here some where, would you like me to give him a call back and get him to call you directly.  You know I'm always only to happy to help a fellow GZer.

...yet he didn't seem so taken, I don't get it.

He was very polite though.  He didn't get at all upset when I told him he just wasn't listening to me.

You have to admit I was fairly arrogant on it and that didn't seem to phase him at all.

freitasm: Right. So they are calling on behalf of Origin Communications (origincommunications.co.nz) then?

Interesting.

Yes that does look like the company, all the sliders on the front page match the deals he was talking up.

freitasm:
"You'll be very glad to know".

How could they possibly know you will be glad?

I can only assume that he reads minds.

I was very impressed...  he seemed to know how he could make my non-existent land line free.

I also made it clear that I make lots of international calls, he didn't ask what I pay but knew that his 99 cent capped calls would save me money.

Yet their web site makes it quite clear that I'd be paying roughly double per minute than I currently pay...

Australia Mobile  $0.46 per minute

2Talk - Australia Mobile - $0.23

Well lets make it uneconomic for them to continue or just really frustrating- so when you receive one of these call ask them to hold on- they are calling from overseas so there is a real cost of calling. I have used the following to get them to sit on my phone and waste there time- note while they are waiting im off doing my own thing

So a few that seem to have worked:

1)Micrsoft Call: Hold on yes my PC is bad- ill start it up,  it must be bad it is taking ages, let me go  and check for you- and make them wait, 10 minute later or the next add break- tell them its still starting and you are really going to need there help as this is the worst it has ever been. then try and sell them life insurance
2) Telecom Scam/Cold calls: Really keen to progress this but i need to discuss it with the Wife- she pays the bills- hold on let me talk to her- then try and sell them life insurance
3) Fretisim- Loved the Porn playing in the back ground and had to give porps for that
4) Start selling them insurance and telephony services- make it up- tell him you can give him a better deal than he can give you. it really pisses them off but its a bit of there own medcine
5) the other one i did was gave the phone to my 3 year old- it was 10am after chocolate and she tried to talk there ear off

SO if you can get them to hold for approx 15 minutes thats a: 15 minutes they are not pestering someone else
It is also 15 minutes of cost- although small it starts to add up

Also ask them if they have an 0800 number you can call them onb- then they pay even more!!!!!!

With the life insurance- turn it on them- after silence from there rubbish staert with:
Hello there Sir- thanks for taking my call- do you know your life is at risk 24/7/365 and go for it- make something up- us adults dont get ot use the imagination as much as we shoudl so have fun, run with it-Oh it  really furstrates them- tell them its enevitiable they will need it one day, they are over paying with there current provider

Have some fun and turn the tables

freitasm: "You will be getting 10 GB for your downloading. Your browsing and uploading will be unlimited."

Wow... Unbelievable. These guys are promising some stuff there...

Just pump all your traffic via port 80 and free data! :D

They should at least get some more convincing sales staff....

Ramjet007: For some "spam" calls i just say, hang on a sec, then put the phone down and carry on doing what i was doing.

Some say on for ages.

Yeah I did this once and came back 45 minutes later and they were still holding! I guess for them as long as they are on calls it counts?

It doesn't work. The sales centre is probably outsourced and using a cheap VoIP service (if not even a hacked PBX to get free calls out in country). Even if they have to pay for calls they probably get the money back on the first couple months billing.

While that's a good laugh to joke about, I don't support that sort of thing.

ya I'm not really a big fan of that one either.

I think we have to remember the guy is a fellow human and also has to eat too.

It annoys me a little that these sales guys just mislead people and it was obvious he was just leading to getting my details to sign me up before even attempting a trial close.

His language issues clearly meant the conversation was confused.

However, I think we also need to remember that these guys do actually do a number of quite important jobs.

They help to highlight choice in the market.  If I was a low volume user who liked to make the ocational long call then his package may represent some value.

If I was just sitting on an existing long term service with 'Telecom' then again, his offering may represent some value.

For other providers, having these guys in the market proves there is choice (even if some here might argue that choice doesn't really represent as much value as some here offer).

Something else to consider, most times, the callers themselves are under the impression they have a valid and genuine job; a lot of times the 'sales staff' are recruited into 'work from home' type arrangements.

I am usually polite, but adamant that I never buy anything over the phone and I request, politely never to call again. Seems to work fine (unlike the flyer deliveries in my neighbourhood, now there is a genuine problem we should all be working towards ending).

Real estate and lawn mowing ones seem to be the only ones that ignore the no circulars sign.

At least with the real estate ones you know who to complain to, and if they dont have a slot on their door and I have to use 3m Spray glue to hold the returned spam mail to where they will see it on their window so be it...

I just had a call from Origin Communications in "Rosedale, opposite North Shore" (I think that is what he said). I googled them and learn it is "NXT Telecom Limited (NXT Telecom) trading as Origin Communications". So that's the same as Spirit Telco. I had great difficulty understanding the guy because (a) there was a lot of other talking in his background (b) the line quality was poor (not a great advert for a telecoms co), and (c) he had a heavy accent (to this Kiwi ear). I tried very patiently and politely to understand what he was trying to tell me, but eventually he hung up on me without even saying goodbye. What a failure as a sales operation. Not that he would have succeeded if I had understood him.
