Nice you'll have to let us know how it goes. Amazon will deliver one of the 128GB patriots to the door in NZ for $175-180NZD by the looks of it.

I think patriot is fairly well respected as a brand in the US. I've come across them before but not as much as others. Reviews and performance look very good on it. I might consider one too now... ;-)

Thanks all, good discussion!

I'm looking at SSD options again now, it is a pity the external case options are so ugly and another concern is I have had less than perfectly engineered external cases in the past :-/

The Transcend ESD200 is quite tempting as an out of the box product.

I also quite like the small size of mSATA SSD and the price and performance seems comparable?

This is what I've got for my 2.5" SSD: Arctic 2.5 USB 3.5 case.

Some 250 GB SSDs on Amazon ship to New Zealand and the prices are well bellow the GST threshold these days.

You know where to get some cheap Amazon credit if you need ;)

Looks snazzy but it is bigger (though thinner) than my WD 320GB normal old HDD :-(

And yes, I will buy from Amazon with your delicious credit :-)

scottjpalmer: I think I have decided on the MyDigitalSSD Bullet Proof USB 3.0 mSATA SSD Enclosure Adapter and the 256GB ADATA XPG SX300 SATA 6Gb/s mSATA Solid State Drive.

I think . . .

Don't you think that USB 3.0 will slow down mSATA SSD speed?
I've noticed that most of the new PCs and Laptops comes with eSATA port, so maybe it can work fater with some of like these adapters:
MSATA SSD Converter to 2.5 Inch SATA Case

Power Over eSATA USB to 2.5" SATA HDD 22 pin Cable

Also here is some speed test of different interface combos, where eSATA goes 20-30% faster than USB 3.0:
