In my quest for minimalism I am progressively ditching the collection of USB HDDs and USB flash drives that I have amassed over the past 10 years.

My intention is to get 1 decent one, at this stage the front runner is the Kingston DataTraveler HyperX 3.0 128GB (DTHX30/128GB).

Does anyone have any experience with this drive in particular or anything else to recommend? I considered a USB SSD but this is more minimal ;-)

I like the look of the Corsair Flash Voyager® GT Turbo USB 3.0 128GB (CMFGTT3-128GB) but Corsair are being prats with availability info which isn't a good sign.

I have no experience with such a beast but am willing to be a guinea pig for anyone who has one to give me.

Jeff Atwood posted his take on the Patriot Supersonic Magnum a while back. Looks like you can get a 128GB version so might be worth considering depending on availability.

Thanks. I did look at those on Amazon but I was being a bit of a brand snob (never heard of them) and also it looks like they have been around for a while so might be older tech?

I found out most flash drives are really slow even on USB 3.0... I got a Sony drive and that was slow. I then put my Crucial C300 256GB SSD on a USB 3.0 case and plugged to my laptop... A lot faster than USB key devices and good speed compared to an internal SSD...

If you are thinking of replacing something for long term, forget flash drives and get a decent thing. 256GB SSD devices are getting cheaper and a $30 buys you a USB 3.0 case. It will last you longer at the end.

Seems that USB drives are a race to the bottom. I have bought a 16 gig USB 3 drive that cant even do 25MB/s reads when in a USB3 port. Nothing in the shops has benchmarks on the USB flash drives. I found that a sandisk fancy micro SD in a reader works faster than a same size and similar priced USB flash drive so that is what I do now.

25MB/s? As I said, get a SSD, put in a USB 3 case and be done with it...

Everyone can boast about read/write speeds...But Will it really matter THAT much to you on the road? Does reliability and build quality in a portable profile take priority over whether or not your 1.5GB DVD rip transfers to it in 2 minutes rather than 30 seconds?
I have a basic 16GB Sandisk stick. Never had a problem, super small. I stick it in flash cars that let you stream music from drives without a problem. Not sure if your car is going to care if your memory stick can stream music at 200MB/s rather than 25MB/s

If speed is your thing, an SSD in a sturdy case is probably for you after all.

Get the new 1TB pendrive that is coming out and be done with it. I think only likely to cost about $2K at release.

Oh, and regarding Patriot as a brand - I've heard good things about them when researching the Patriot Gauntlet Node. AFAIK they have a reasonable name.

The OP is talking about a replacing a bunch of USB drives. To me it says that he wasn't too worried about portability at all otherwise he wouldn't have many of those.

I think the way it was worded is more about convenient external storage than mobile external storage. Sure a USB flash drive will be mobile, but an external 2.5" case is not that bad when you get to the point of storing hundreds of gigabytes.
